THOUGH quaint and laid-back Kilmore is the ideal place to refresh and unwind as the summer season kicks in, where there is plenty on offer in this little corner of south Wexford, be it food, music, activities or shopping.

Owing to its location, Kilmore is renowned for being home to some of the best quality seafood in the country. Take your pick of one of the many award-winning seafood restaurants where you can choose from a wide selection of locally-caught fish.

Mary Barry’s Seafood Bar and Restaurant, with their much loved head chef Nicky Cullen, have recently introduced an evening set menu which is available Monday to Thursday from 5.30 p.m. During the summer months you can choose your own oysters and lobsters fresh from the in-house sea tank.

For that special occasion or party at home why not pick up some of Stella Maris Food to cook. Their seafood products are exclusively harvested from the unpolluted waters off the Irish coast and their selected fishing vessels are at sea 24 to 72 hours before landing. With their processing facility only situated minutes from the closest port of landing, freshness is guaranteed.

When the plates are clean and your stomach is full, why not dip into one of the cosy pubs. At Kehoe Seafood Bar you are sure to receive a warm welcome from the locals, who will only be happy to tell you the history of their community.

Take home a souvenir for yourself by picking up a unique hand-crafted piece in one of the small shops like The Hidden Gem Gifts and Crafts or buy that beauty set for a nice birthday present in Bridgetown Pharmacy.

For those fishermen that haul their daily catch off the boats, Kehoe Marine Hardware and Marine Supplies have everything in stock from a needle to an anchor.

With many schools coming to an end, why not take the kids to visit Ballycross Apple Farm. The farm and its buildings date back to 1863 and have been called a ‘Hidden Treasure’, with its beautiful stone courtyard, horses heads bowing in and out of their stables, chirping of birds and the lovely smell of home baked waffles and crepes. It certainly is a perfect place to enjoy an afternoon with the family.
