Eoin and Liam on set with Tubridy and friends at RTÉ
AS PART of our Transition Year work experience programme, a number of students put their names forward for the chance to take part in an RTÉ work experience initiative.
The names were drawn from a hat and we were the lucky ones, excited by the prospect of this once in a lifetime experience.
We arrived in the RTÉ studios on Tuesday, March 7, and were met by Áine and Norma, who were to be our guides for the next four days.
We met with the RTÉ health and safety manager and watched some short video clips and a PowerPoint outlining how important safety is on the sets and on the campus in general.
We were given a tour of the whole campus. Each day we ate our lunch in the canteen and got to meet many well-known faces at RTÉ such as Ryan Tubridy and Nicky Byrne.
During our time in RTÉ we took part in various activities that showed us what it is like to work in all aspects of the media. One of the highlights of our time was producing our own radio programme. We were taught how to use the sound equipment and radio technology and then had to write a script for our radio show. We had to control our own sound and music and host the show ourselves. It was a great experience as we got to see what it is like behind the scenes of all the radio shows in Ireland.
We were given presentations on marketing and we had to produce our own marketing scheme for an advertisement made by RTÉ.
We were shown the RTÉ archives and got the chance to see how the old tapes and recordings have been processed and stored throughout the years. We found this fascinating.
We were given tours of all of the TV sets and shows such as Fair City, Prime Time and the Lotto. We saw rehearsals for The Late Late Show and also saw the news being broadcast live from the control room.
Eoin was interviewed for RTÉ News by a reporter who needed students for an piece on the Irish Defence Forces. He was asked to play a new game developed by the Army and to answer questions and give his opinion. It was great experience to appear on TV and to see what it is like to be interviewed.
