Buggy beats clubmate Kavanagh in 60 x 30 clash

GAVIN BUGGY cemented his place at the top of the group in the Wexford GAA Handball 60 x 30 Senior open singles championships as he defeated his St. Joseph’s clubmate, Daniel Kavanagh, during the week.

In a game played in Castlebridge, the more experienced Buggy was a 3-0 winner over the still improving Kavanagh.

In the second game of a double-header at the venue, Tommy Hynes from St. Mary’s had an important 2-1 win over Barry Goff from Castlebridge.

The group table now sees Buggy out in front on twelve points, with Kavanagh and Goff in joint second on six points each, while Hynes holds the vital fourth qualification spot on five points.

Kavanagh and Buggy joined forces to defeat the unbeaten Berry brothers, Mikie and Jim, from Barntown. The St. Joseph’s duo were 2-1 winners on the night and know that a victory in their final game against Eugene Kelly and Malachy Whelan could see them join the Berrys on ten points at the top of the table.

David Kenny (Castlebridge) replaced Mick Armstrong at the top of Group A in the Junior singles championships as he was a 21-18, 21-15 winner over the Kilmyshall man on Saturday.

Noel Holohan (Templeudigan) kept his slim qualification chances alive with a 21-18, 21-6 win over Thomas Hall (Castlebridge) in the same group.

The Armstrong brothers, Mick and Tommy, from Kilmyshall won the opening game of the Junior doubles championship with a 3-0 win over Benny Doyle and Barry McWilliams from Horeswood.

Robert Byrne (Bridgetown) moved joint top of the Junior B singles Group B with a 3-0 win over Cian Kehoe from St. Joseph’s and now sits on the summit of the group level on points with James Stanners.

Paddy Curran of St. Martin’s all but secured himself a spot in the knockout stages of the Junior ‘C’ singles as he had a 3-0 win over James Mythen from Castlebridge.

Mikie Murphy moved top of Group C in the Junior ‘C’ singles with a 3-0 win over Eamonn Codd from Bridgetown, while Brian Busher also moved to the top of his group with a hard-earned 2-1 win over Mark Cardiff from Taghmon.

In the Junior ‘C’ doubles, Brian Busher and Eamonn Codd from Bridgetown had an important 3-0 win over John Murphy and James Nolan from Kilmyshall.

In Junior ‘D’ singles, five games were played. Shane Terry (St. Joseph’s) defeated Jack Murphy from Taghmon 2-1, while in the same group James Moran (Ballymitty) moved to second spot with a 3-0 win over Brendan Holohan from Templeudigan.

However, Pádraig Devereux from Castlebridge ensured he will finish top of the group with a 3-0 win over Moran.

Shane Birney moved to top of the table in Group B of the Junior ‘D’ singles with a 3-0 win over Robert Cogley from Ballymitty, while Adam Walsh remained hot on his tail with a 2-1 win over Liam Maher from Taghmon.

In the Junior ‘D’ doubles championships, Shane Terry and Conor Keeling moved level at the top of the table with a 3-0 win over Ballymitty duo Robert Cogley and Garry Jordan.

Barry McWilliams from Horeswood was a 3-0 winner over Ricky Barron from Barntown in the Masters ‘A’ singles, while in the Masters ‘B’ singles Robert Byrne was a 2-1 victor over John Murphy from Kilmyshall.

Meanwhile, in the Masters ‘B’ doubles, David Cleary and Marty Kinsella were 2-1 winners in a Ballymitty derby as they defeated clubmates Paul Cleary and John Sinnott. John Bail of Castlebridge was a 3-0 winner over Jim Doyle in the Diamond Masters ‘A’ singles competition.

Eva Creane moved to second place in the women’s Junior ‘B’ singles group as the St. Joseph’s player had a 3-0 win over Leanne Boland from Ballymitty.
