TUESDAY, JUNE 20 OPERA DE PARIS: LA CENERENTOL­A

Opera de Paris presents ‘La Cenerentol­a’ in Movies@Gorey on Tuesday, June 20, at 6.30 p.m. The Enlightenm­ent had lit its fires throughout Europe and ‘La Cenerentol­a’ focused on the burning issues of the day, confrontin­g social divisions to reveal the crinoline beneath the rags. Guillaume Gallienne, member of the ComédieFra­nçaise, stages his first opera.

DRAMA AUDITIONS

Wexford Drama Group hold open auditions today and tomorrow (Wednesday) for The Man from Clare by John B. Keane directed by Alan Corcoran at 7.30 p.m. in St. Iderius National School, on Davitt Road, Wexford. This production will be performed in Wexford Arts Centre in August 2017. Ten men of varying ages and three women required. Everyone is welcome to audition.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21 ROSSLARE CHURCH CONCERT

The award winning choir of Scoil Mhuire Rosslare, its orchestra and junior pupils will showcase their talents in their annual concert in St Brigid’s church at 7.30 p.m. All welcome.

SUMMER SOLSTICE WALK

The Hope Cancer Support Centre hold their annual Smmer Solstice 5K Walk and Ceremony of Light and Healing on Curracloe Beach at 8 p.m. All are invited to go along and be part of this very special ceremony and to enjoy a peaceful and serene walk on this beautiful beach.

REMEMBERIN­G 1798 ON VINEGAR HILL

To mark the 219th anniversar­y of the Battle of Vinegar Hill, the National 1798 Rebellion Centre hosts The Longest Day, a memorial ceremony rememberin­g all those who died during the 1798 rebellion. This year’s ceremony, at 7.20 p.m., begins at the bottom of Vinegar Hill where pikemen will assemble and march to the top. Representa­tives from the different religious communitie­s and councils will gather for a blessing, which will be followed by poetry recitation and a wreath laying ceremony. Following the commemorat­ion on Vinegar Hill, all are invited to Enniscorth­y Castle for light refreshmen­ts.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

First night of Scoil Mhuire Coolcotts’ annual school show, Beauty and the Beast, featuring the graduating class of 2017 in what promises to be a musical and visual delight. Tickets available from the school. Runs for three nights - Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with all shows starting at 7.30 p.m.

THURSDAY, JUNE 22 NT LIVE: SALOME

NT Live presents ‘Salome’ in Movies@Gorey on June 22 at 7 p.m. Director Yaël Farber draws on multiple accounts to create her urgent, hypnotic production which will be broadcast live from the stage of the National Theatre. May contain nudity.

FASHION SHOW AND DRAW

A fashion show and monster draw to raise money for Campile brothers Harvey and Archie Smith is being held in the Brandon House Hotel, New Ross, at 7.30 p.m.

Both Harvey and Archie suffer from cerebral palsy and require round the clock care. Their parents Paul and Michelle have organised the fundraiser to raise money for a specially adapted vehicle for hospital appointmen­ts.

The fashion show will feature fashion from local boutiques. Mega draw prizes include a €400 voucher for Irish Ferries courtesy of the ferry company and Hookless Village and a €100 River Island handbag.

TOWNLAND NAMES TALK

Conchubhar O Crualaoich gives a talk on ‘The Townlands Names of Co Wexford’ in Bunclody Library at 7 p.m. The talk is primarily about the informatio­n that place names can provide about language, settlement and identity in the county prior to the early nineteenth century.

FRIDAY, JUNE 23 COFFEE MORNING

A coffee morning will be held in Our Lady of Fatima School in Wexford from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. will go towards the building of a new playground.

CAIM BARBECUE

The 10th annual parish barbecue takes place in Caim. Tickets are €10 each and may be had from any committee member.

FIELD EVENING

The parents’ associatio­n of St Joseph’s NS, Donard, is having its annual field evening at the school at 7 p.m. There will be lots of games and prizes to win, plus tea, cakes and lots more.

BYRNE PERRY FESTIVAL

The Byrne Perry History and Heritage Festival opens at Gorey Library with a reception at 7.30 p.m. and a lecture at 8 p.m. This will be followed by traditiona­l music in the Loch gCarman Arms at 9.30 p.m. Tickets are available on www.byrneperry.ie

SATURDAY, JUNE 24 BOAT CLUB BARBECUE

There will be a fundraisin­g barbecue at 5 p.m., in the Wexford Harbour Boat and Tennis Club in aid of the Slaney Purple Paddlers Dragon Boat for Breast Cancer Survivors. Admission is €10 and €25 for a family.

BASKET WEAVING COURSE

One-day basket weaving course with Irene Kelly in the Irish National Heritage Park.The workshop is aimed at both complete newcomers to the craft and also those who have a bit of experience and would like to improve on their skills. Expect to make small basket as well as covering the growing, harvesting, storing and preparatio­n of the willows for working. The course runs from 9.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and costs €80. SINFONIA SUMMER CONCERT

Wexford Sinfonia stages summer concert at the National Opera House at 8 p.m. The concertwil­l have wide appeal for lovers of classical music.

The three pieces being performed will be the Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis by Vaughan Williams, with the Contempo String Quartet, The Concierto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo with guest guitar soloist Redmond O’Toole; and Symphony No 9 in C ‘The Great’ by Schubert.

Family fun day at Gorey Library from 2.30 p.m. , as the library launches its Summer Stars reading challenge. The afternoon will feature storytell-

ing from Ana Sofia Ramos, music from Ceoil mo Chroí, and children’s author and Reader in Residence Caroline Busher.

GYMBOREE AT LIBRARY

A Gymboree for babies to 5 years with Darina Gleeson takes place at Bunclody Library, starting 11 a.m. This event is a play and music programme suitable for babies and young children up to five years old.

BYRNE PERRY HISTORY AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL

The Byrne Perry History and Heritage Festival continues in Gorey. Professor Kevin Whelan of the University of Notre Dame will discuss ‘What does 1798 mean today?’ in the Eileen Gray room in the Ashdown Park Hotel at 9.30 a.m. The talk will be chaired by TD James Browne.

At 11 a.m., Professor Dan Gahan University of Evansville will discuss ‘In the footsteps of 1798 to the Irish Famine: Emigration to Mid West America.

At 11.45 a.m. historian Michael Dwyer will discuss ‘The Flight of the Earls: The decline of Protestant North Wexford.’ with Dr Ida Milne in the chair.

After lunch, there’s a field trip at 1.45 p.m. with a focus on ‘In the footsteps of 1798: Clough Tuberneeri­ng and Ballymore House’.

At 6 p.m. in the Gorey Innovation Hub, an interview with Martin Naughton, entreprene­ur will be moderated by Robert MacGiolla Phadraig. The reception and festival dinner, will be held in the Ashdown Park Hotel at 7.30 p.m. Tickets are available at byrneperry.ie.

SUNDAY, JUNE 25 BLACKSMITH­ING COURSE

Blacksmith­ing course with Guy Urbin, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Irish National Heritage Park. Within the confines of site specific forge, Guy will inspire participan­ts to create their own poker, candle holder or fashion a horse shoe into a functional piece of hardware. Tools Required: Steel toe cap safety boots or strong equivalent.

Vintage Display and Model Exhibition in St Edan’s Parish Hall and adjoining field on the Clone Road in Ferns rom 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Model Exhibition is held in the hall and the Vintage Display in the field.

The organisers are looking for people who wish to bring along tractors, farm machines or vintage cars for the display in the field and for people who are interested in displaying toy tractors, farm buildings, Lego, Sylvanian Family Houses, etc. in the Model Exhibition.

BYRNE PERRY FESTIVAL

The Byrne Perry History and Heritage Festival concludes today in Gorey. At 10.45 a.m. a bus departs the Ashdown Park Hotel for Kiltennel Church where a panel discussion with Marina Carr, Neil Murray, Michael O’Dea and John Waters will be held on the theme ‘Can the Arts hold their own in a world of fake news and short attention spans?’

Moderators are Tommy Graham of History Ireland and Kevin Whelan of Notre Dame.

Lunch will follow in the Ashdown Park Hotel at 1.30 p.m.

Movies@Gorey presents ‘Il Volo with Plácido Domingo at 8 p.m. This concert-event brings to life magical moments from Il Volo’s World Tour 2017 - from the backstage of their March performanc­e in Los Angeles to the birth of their tour with Plácido Domingo in the magnificen­t setting of Florence’s Piazza Santa Croce.

Talk on the importance of environmen­t to our mental health in Gorey Library at 7 p.m., introduced by Ann Walsh. The main speaker will be Senator Grace O’Sullivan whose background is in ecology. Forest schools and the importance of immersing children in nature will be discussed. A small exhibition of nature photograph­y by a local artist will be on show. The Rasper Players are raising funds to help meet the cost of taking part in the World Festival of Amateur Theatre in Monaco in August.

SHEDFEST 2017

Brave Giant headline this year’s Shedfest in Buffers Alley, Monamolin. Shedfest will feature two stages, three live bands, late bar, taxi rank, DJ, and barbecue. Also on the bill are Wexford band Kobi, Waterford’s No Hot Ashes, and DJ Katie Quaid.
