ROSSLARE LADIES
The format of the day on Tuesday, June 13, was Scotch foursomes, Countess of Granard qualifier, and fundraiser for the National Council for the Blind of Ireland.
The prizes were sponsored by Wallace’s of Wellingtonbridge, and Joan Wallace was there to present the wonderful hampers to the twelve delighted players.
A total of 28 fourballs played and the winning combination of Susan Evans and Teresa Cowman qualified to represent Rosslare in The Granard Cup at Malahide, Co. Dublin, on Monday, August 21.
The monies raised are being donated to the National Council for the Blind of Ireland for their Early Learning Centre - a pre-school which provides a specialised education service for children experiencing sight loss. A generous donation of €200 approximately was raised.
Sunday (June 18) marked the first round deadline for the Nancy Todd club singles competition and the club fourball competition.
Results are now recorded for the second rounds which have to be completed by August 15. Well done to all who have advanced to the next stage.
The Wednesday open competitions are now in full swing (!) and we welcome all golfers to enjoy a round on our championship links course. Give Jamie a call on 05391-32032 to book your tee-time.

Stewart Harrington was the sponsor of two competitions in Rosslare last weekend: a team of four event on Saturday and a gents’ singles on Sunday.
On Sunday the very steady Pat Rossiter was the winner with 37 points. Pat (7) turned in 18 points but into a gale of wind on the way home he really performed well.
He started back with a birdie two at the tenth followed by three pars. He then had four bogeys but finished in style with a birdie on the 18th for 19 points and a two-point win over another man who is having a good run, Kevin Foran (13).
Kevin had a great first nine of 22 points but failed to keep it up on the way home. Gary Collins (+3) had birdies at the third, fourth, sixth and 18th to win the gross on level par.
Paud O’Brien (3) won the veterans on 34 points and Nick Rossiter (16) was third on 33 points.

On the inter-club scene it was a disappointing weekend with two teams going down. On Saturday in Courtown the Junior Cup team emerged as one of the four qualifiers but in the matchplay went down to Enniscorthy 3/2.
The team was Rory Deane, P.J. Doyle, Derek Wickham, Gavin Smith and Ciarán Cuddihy. The managers were Jim Cullimore and John McDonald.
On Sunday the South Leinster team with four players at home went down to New Ross 4/3. The team featured Jim Hennessy, Tom McGrath, Eamonn Mullan and Martin Buggy (home), and Jim Anglim, Alan Cuddihy and Philip Quigley (away). The managers were Robin Gardner, Diarmaid Ó Raghnaigh and Boyd Scott.

TAGHMON SOCIETY
The society played Wexford on June 10, and 43 players turned up after a very heavy night’s rain with many thinking that the place would be closed.
They hadn’t reckoned on the skills and mastery of our resident ace greenkeeper in the ranks who had been manicuring and perfecting the course into a playable condition all week. The course was in great condition and very playable considering the battering it got from the elements, but the strong wind had a say on the direction of many a ball’s flight.
The honours went to our youngest member, Ryan Cashin, a far better golfer than his father! Keep it up young man as the single figures are coming within reach the way you are going.

There were two winners of the twos club, namely Eamon Roche and Tom O’Gorman winning €40 each. Please note this is not a misprint by not including Anthony Wadding’s name. I played with him that day and, trust me, he wasn’t within an asses roar of getting a two. Mia Delaney was the winner of our lottery bonus ball.
Welcome back to Dermot Breen after a rest from golf for three years, and yet he still came in with a creditable score of 33, just like he had never been away.
There is a rumour going around the village that our very own Tiger has now given up golf due to a near-death experience at our last outing. Whilst sitting quietly in his hired buggy admiring the scenery and reflecting on how badly he was playing, he was stirred out of a quiet moment by a stray golf ball travelling at 200 mph plus right through his buggy, luckily or unluckily missing him.
The ball hitter will remain anonymous but suffice to say it was a recent Captain, a very recent Captain. Tiger been seen in his hi-vis vest apparently working for the Tidy Towns committee.
The next outing is in New Ross on July 15 at 11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. It is the coveted one where everyone will be trying just that bit harder, Captain Seamus McLoughlin’s prize to the members.
There will be a timesheet in operation so get your names in early. You will then be informed of who you are playing with and at what time. As usual, let a committee member know whether you are playing or not. Bring along a friend as a visitor.
The Captain’s dinner will be in the Ferrycarrig Hotel at approximately 8 p.m. We are providing a bus back to Taghmon afterwards for society members. The day is being sponsored by our genial host who puts up with us all year long, Dolores Anglim of our homebase pub, Alice Brady’s. Many thanks Dolores for your generosity.

WEXFORD LADIES
There was a two-person scramble on Monday, June 12. Results: 1, Sally O’Neill and Richella MacCarvill (8.2), 67.75; 2, Tara Dunne and Ruth Kennedy (2), 68; 3, Carmel Murphy and Margaret Atkinson (4.5), 71.5.
Sixty-three ladies played in Thursday’s 18-hole stableford competition sponsored by Keville Hairdressing. Mary Walsh continued her run of good form with a win two weeks in a row. Mary will now go forward to play in the Valerie Doyle competition.
Results: 1, Mary Walsh (23), 37 points; 2, Helen McGuire (21), 36 points; 3, Cathríona Walsh (14), 34 points. Ruth Kennedy (5) won the gross prize with 26 points. Carmel Murphy (8) won the Seniors with 34 points.
The nine-hole competition was won by Pauline O’Neill (17) with 12 points. Nearest the pin was Ger O’Brien with 2 ft. 8 ins.
The weather seems to be improving and if you are looking to play more golf there are various competitions on each week in the club. On Monday mornings there is the ladies’ Seniors’ competition.
For a very enjoyable and fun night, why not put your name down for the Tuesday evening mixed foursomes? On Wednesdays there is a ladies’ and gents’ fourball competition.
The weekly ladies’ competition is on Thursdays, and on Fridays there’s an open three-person team event. We also have our open week coming up the first week in July.
On Monday, July 3, there is a mixed fourball competition, and on Thursday, July 6, a singles stableford competition will be held. There’s plenty of golfing opportunities available in the next couple of weeks, so why not get out and enjoy the summer?
Just a reminder that if you are playing away and have a good score in either a singles or team event, please record your score in the away scores folders in the locker room.
Next weekend, on Saturday, June 24, the Junior Cup team will be playing Carlow in Mount Juliet at 3.30 p.m. in the inter-club team competitions. The Challenge Cup team will play Courtown in Borris on Monday, June 26. As always, your support for the teams would be greatly appreciated.

WEXFORD
The week’s big competition was the second leg of the two-legged Jim Whitty Memorial.
The overall winner after the two legs with a good score of 75 points was Junior Ben McAleese. In second place was new veteran Tom Sullivan, with Dean Malone coming third on 71 points.
The gross prize was won by the consistent Peter Byrne with 58 points. The vets’ prize was taken by ex-Kilmore and Sarsfields dynamo Pat Furlong.
The best score in the first leg was recorded by Laurence Byrne on 39 points, and the second leg best score came from William Hanton with 38 points.
Many thanks to the Whitty family and Whitford House for their continued sponsorship of this competition which is held in memory of Jim Whitty, a great sportsman, who excelled in both golf and cycling.
Wednesday’s 14-hole fourball was won by Mick Rossiter and Michael Swan with 37 points. Second place went to Seán Hurley and Mick Fortune on 34 points, and in third place were Michael Field and Chris Grant, also on 34 points.
The last Joker winner was Michael Dempsey. The Joker draw takes place every Sunday at 8 p.m., and next week’s prize in in excess of €2,800.

Our Captain’s charity this year is Enable Ireland. Despite the wet and windy conditions a good entry teed off on Saturday, June 10, to support this very worthy cause.
Enable provides disability services and their motto is ‘Life With No Limits’, and the St. Helen’s Bay members were delighted to be of assistance in some small way in the great work being done to make life more comfortable for our less fortunate neighbours.
The day was sponsored by Panache Cleaners of Cabinteely and Mount Merrion. Well done to Pat O’Connor who produced a level par round to claim first prize.
Our Jimmy Bruen Shield team took to the fairways under a blazing Sun in New Ross on Saturday in the regional qualifiers. Our lads gave of their best but alas, came up just short.
