Double gold for Ebosele at national Juvenile event
LYSTUS EBOSELE of Enniscorthy A.C. proved her dominance at last weekend’s national Juvenile track and field championships by winning two gold medals.
First she won the Under-17 discus (1 kg.) with a new best of 34.68m. She followed up by taking the shot putt title (13.45m).
Ryan Carthy-Walshe (Adamstown) won the Under-19 high jump with ease, his best jump being 2.10m.
Maeve Hayes (St. Paul’s) was third in the Under-16 high jump with a fine jump of 1.60m. She also placed sixth in the long jump with 4.92m.
Fellow Adamstown athlete Marguerite Furlong was no less convincing in winning the Under-18 discus (1 kg.), with 35.79m being the best of a very consistent series of throws. Amy Forde (St. Killian’s) placed seventh in the same event (28.17m).
Eva Casey (Macamores) backed up her winning form at county and provincial level by taking gold in the Under-13 shot putt. Her best of 10.18m gave her a margin of 32 cm. over her nearest pursuer.
This is the first national title for the Ballygarrett club. Needless to say, Eva was the toast of the village last weekend.
Joshua Hewlett (U.S.A.C.) continued the county’s run of fine form in the field events with a win in the Under-17 javelin (51.42m).
Saidhbhe Byrne (Enniscorthy) took bronze in Under-14 javelin with a new best of 34.10m. She then achieved another P.B. when running 12.02s in the 75m hurdles to place fifth. The versatile young athlete went on to place eighth in the long jump (4.66m).
Saidhbhe’s clubmate Dannan Long was seventh in the Under-13 high jump (1.40m).
Bronagh O’Hanlon (Taghmon) was third in the Under-17 hammer (42.21m).
Pádraig Hore took a bronze medal in the Under-18 shot putt with a P.B. of 14.39m.
In the Under-16 discus the St. Paul’s strongman, Gergely Pap, won a silver medal with a fine best throw of 41.21m. He followed this up with a seventh place finish in the hammer (38.55m), while clubmate Milan Kovacs was ninth (31.10m).
Other good field events performances included sixth for Adamstown’s Ciara Mooney in Under-13 javelin (23.73m), sixth for clubmate Kate Jackman in Under-16 javelin (27.68m), seventh for Orlaith Deegan (S.B.R.) in Under-13 high jump (1.40m), and seventh for Tara Doyle (Adamstown) in Under-17 triple jump (10.05m).
Gorey’s Corrine Kenny, running in the colours of St. Laurence O’Toole A.C., was back in winning form, taking gold in the Under-16 800m in 2.17.36. Adam O’Connor (United Striders) won a bronze medal in a very competitive Under-15 800m in a time of 2:09.42.
Adam’s clubmate, Darragh Flannelly, placed tenth in the Under-14 800m (2:20.43m). And, proving the club’s strength in depth at middle distance, Myles Hewlett placed seventh in the Under-13 600m (1:40.51m). In the girls’ Under-15 800m, Danika Gilshinan (Menapians) came in ninth (2:26.45m).
Staying with middle distance, Liam Turner (D.M.P.) placed eighth in the 3,000m (9.54.78m).
On the race walking front the county’s athletes acquitted themselves well. There was silver for Taghmon’s Joseph Hanlon in the Under-18 5k walk (30.19.06m).
His brother, James, also picked up a silver in the Under-16 3k event with United Striders’ Ryan Kielthy one place back in third (18.47.85m). Ciara Murphy (U.S.A.C.) was fourth in the Under-14 2k walk (12.11.70m).
Her clubmate, Eve Byrne, was fifth in the Under-15 2k walk with Aoibhinn Crean (Adamstown) in seventh place. Triona Mooney, also Adamstown, was sixth in the Under-18 3k walk.
Aisling Kelly (Taghmon) blitzed her way to a fabulous silver medal in the Under-15 100m final. Her time of 12.72s was just 0.1s behind the winner. She also won bronze in the long jump (5.07m).
There was silver success for Bree’s ace sprinter Aoife Cloke-Rochford in the Under-19 100m hurdles (15.01s). Aoife also took bronze in the 100m (12.36s).
Sam O’Neill of Menapians took a bronze in the Under-19 100m hurdles (16.57s). Aaron Tierney-Smith rounded off his best season yet with a silver in Under-18 hurdles. He can be well pleased with his consistent form throughout the track season, with medals already won in the National Schools and National Juniors.
Bree’s recent athlete of the month award winner Seán Rowley took a silver in the 80m (10.56s). Clubmate Abbie Doyle won a bronze in the girls’ Under-12 60m (8.76s).
Orlaith Byrne (S.B.R.) placed fifth in the Under-13 60m hurdles (10.24s).
Karyn Murphy (Enniscorthy) placed fourth in the Under-17 100m hurdles with a P.B. of 15.11s, and sixth in the long jump. Fellow Enniscorthy athlete Ross Daly placed fourth in the Under-18 100m (11.27s).
Jack Hayden (Menapians) had a great run in the Under-18 400m final, finishing fourth in 52.38s.
Fellow Menapians sprinter Ciarán Maher made the final of the Under-19 100m in which he finished seventh (11.47s).
Well done to Enniscorthy A.C. athlete Michael Bowler who represented Ireland earlier this month at the European Combined Events Cup in Monzón, Spain. Michael finished fifth out of 27 in his division.
Michael, who captained the Irish team, described the experience as ‘probably the best weekend of my life. I finally got the performance that I’ve been waiting for for so many years.
‘I finished in fifth place after four big personal bests to help break 7,000 points for the first time, something I thought I might never do following a tough period of injuries.’
