TD SAYS GIVE BARRACKS TO TOWN, BUT DO WE WANT IT?

- By DAVID TUCKER

THE OLD Wexford garda station on Roche’s Road should be handed over to the county council for ‘community purposes’, possibly for use by boxing and martial arts clubs, according to Deputy James Browne. However, the mayor says the local authority should be wary about inheriting other people’s problems.

‘I’m always wary of somebody handing us on second-hand stuff,’ said Mayor Jim Moore, who is concerned that the rundown building may not be fit for public use.

Deputy Browne said the OPW Property Management Division is to examine possible future uses for the crumbling barracks once the new showpiece garda headquarters opens in two months, and it should be handed over to County Hall.

A WEIGHT has been lifted off the face of Shane O’Neill who finally shaved his beard off after growing it out since July 2016 for two charities.

A crowd gathered in Wexford Golf Club to see Shane and his two friends Eoin McMahon and Paddy Murphy finally shave off their long beards.

Shane, from Michael Street, was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when he was a baby, so there was no hesitation when it came to deciding on worthy causes to support – Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and Tracey Lawlor Trust.

‘I was never admitted into hospital for any complications until I was 20. You could say I am on the healthy side of it,’ said Shane, who is now 35.

Shane had been growing his beard for a year and said he ‘could not wait to get rid of it’, especially with the warmer, summer months.

In support of their friend, Eoin and Paddy decided to follow his lead. They had been growing their beards out since January, in anticipation of the big shave.

Meanwhile, Shane’s father Larry organised an open golf competition, with all proceeds from the entry fee being donated to the two charities. James and Frank Morrisey were the winners.
