ABBEY LADIES SOCIETY

Twenty players visited New Ross on Saturday, July 22, for a scramble. The winners were Bridget Duffin and Adeline Fox with 74.3 points, and the runners-up were Theresa Foley, Liz Kelly and Ann Crosbie with 76.4 points.

Nearest the pin was Dympna Molloy, and the longest drive winner was Adeline Fox. Well done ladies.

Abbey ladies played in Carrigelad­e on August 5. The next game is on Friday, August 25, in the Abbey.

NEW ROSS LADIES

Last Wednesday, August 2, the 18-hole v. par was sponsored by Joyces Homecare New Ross.

On August 9 Brooks Jewellers sponsor an 18-hole stroke competitio­n which is a medal competitio­n also.

Get Into Golf ladies will continue with their Wednesday evening activities from 6.20 p.m. The new golfers are enjoying the experience and the fun. Many thanks to the volunteers who come up to accompany the girls on the Wednesday evenings, your generosity is greatly appreciate­d.

The club fundraiser classic is next weekend and we are hoping for a really good turn-out. The Culcita-sponsored prizes are splendid and are on view in the clubhouse this week.

The €20 entry is a steal and ladies, do enter every day to improve your chances of taking home the lovely garden furniture. The huge hampers for the raffle are well worth winning...your Christmas presents sorted!

Support your club this week. Prize-winners will be announced next Sunday. Tickets are on sale from committee members and in the clubhouse. The Minor Alliance will start in September so if you are interested in joining please add your name to the list posted in the ladies’ locker room before the end of August.

August 30 is the date of our annual ladies’ Solheim Cup event. Playing in fours, competitor­s will play six holes of Scotch foursomes, six holes fourball better ball, and six holes single stableford. It is an open so spread the news wide and far. Members’ entry is €10, visitors €15. Booking online is already available.

Fourball matchplay for ladies is well under way but teams are urged to keep to deadlines at this busy holiday period in order that that it can be completed in good time.

Excitement is building for our Mary McKenna team, heading to Co. Meath to do battle with Royal Tara this Thursday, August 10, at 1.30 p.m. This is a tremendous achievemen­t for our girls to reach a Leinster final and we are confident of a positive outcome even from the away fixture.

The team bus will leave from Tinneranny early on Thursday morning so that everyone is relaxed and happy heading out on the first tee. Best wishes to everyone involved and especially the golfers who are an inspiratio­n to the rest of us.

The selected team includes Jacqui Morgan and Mary Maher, Mary Kavanagh and Mary Shannon, Ann Healy and Breda McManus, Ann Conway and Teresa Foley, and Margaret Furlong and Liz Roberts.

The substitute­s travelling will be Eleanor Roche and Elizabeth Purcell. The managers/selectors are Liz Bennett and Jacqui Morgan. Any support is warmly welcomed.

THE GATE SOCIETY

The Gate Golf Society held its sixth outing of 2017 at Faithlegg Golf Club. We were playing for the President’s prize (Mark Purcell).

The sponsors were The Gate Golf Society and Anthony Purcell, Richie Purcell and Johnny Purcell to whom we are very grateful. We want to thank the Faithlegg Golf Club staff for all their help.

The presentati­on was held in the Three Bullet Bar, and congratula­tions to Michael Power who will be the President of the society for 2018.

On the first day of autumn the ladies were keen to get out on the fairways, with the sunshine keeping the rain at bay! The sponsor was Kiltrea Pottery and it was an open singles stableford competitio­n.

COURTOWN

We are facing into another very busy week at Courtown. On Thursday we will once again host the Tomás Funge Memorial Cups. This is an open competitio­n, open to boys and girls with an age limit of up to 18 years.

Handicap limits apply as follows: boys 10 to 28, and for girls 0 to 36. This is the 19th year of this competitio­n and we would like to thank Joe Funge for his continued sponsorshi­p.

The entrance fee is €10, and a light lunch will be served. The timesheet has been reserved from 8 a.m. to 2.30 p.m.

On Wednesday the Gorey Guardian summer series continues with an 18-hole open singles.

On Saturday we welcome two regular societies: Prospect Park (8.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.) and Tara Meadows (10.40 a.m. to 1.15 p.m.). There will be an any combinatio­n fourball in the afternoon.

On Sunday the ladies’ and gents’ singles will be sponsored by Brian Hughes Londis, Ballymoney.

The ageing process is well and truly having an affect as I forgot to mention last week that one of our long-time members scored a hole-in-one at the 14th in the previous week’s Wednesday open. Congratula­tions to Diarmuid Swords who has now joined that elite group.

Tuesday, August 1, our competitio­n was v. par and our sponsor was our profession­al, John Coone. John has been the profession­al in Courtown for quite a number of years now and has always been a great supporter of the ladies’ section.

We are extremely grateful to John and his family for the sponsorshi­p. John, Maria and Shauna were in attendance in the clubhouse to present the lovely prizes on Tuesday evening.

The course was playing slightly longer than normal as a result of the recent precipitat­ion, otherwise the conditions were perfect. Competitio­n standard scratch was 72.

Results: 1, Eleanor Kelly (35), four up; 2, Helen Cole (26), two up; 3, Catherine Ledwidge (14), one up (countback); Cat. A, Catherine Quinn (18), level; Cat. B, Pat White (24), one up; Cat. C, Breda Nolan (34), level.
