ROSSLARE
Two singles competitions were played in Rosslare over the weekend with almost 300 players competing. On Saturday the Summer Cup was played. The winner with 41 points was Cillian Corkery (17).
Young Cillian got a great start of birdie, birdie and turned in 24 points. On the way home he added 17 points which included a birdie at the 18th.
In second place on 40 points was the man in form, Conor Kelly (3). Conor had birdies at the first, fifth, tenth and 18th in halves of 21 and 19 points to beat Ian Lynch (0), who played the first nine in 32, by one point.
Fourth on 39 points was Dixie Devereux (16). Gary Collins (+3) had five birdies in a four under par round of 68 to win the gross. John Galvin (9) won the veterans with 39 points. On Sunday the competition was sponsored by Skoda and resulted in a win for another man at the top of his form, Kevin Foran. It was a good birthday present for Kevin who is now favourite to win all the veterans prizes in the future unless his gardening implements interfere.
On Sunday, Kevin (11) had 21 points on the way out which included two birdies and two double bogeys. He had another double bogey on the eleventh but his 17 points on the way home proved good enough for a one-point win over Kevin Collins (6). Kevin had birdies at the third, tenth, twelfth and 18th.
Brian Fives (4) was third on 35 points, beating Mick Brosnan (10) on the breakdown. Gary Collins was once again well under par when winning the gross, and Tommy Duggan (11, Kilkenny), a former Leinster inter-provincial, won the vets. with 36 points. Ben White (15) won the Junior prize.
Dermot Hall added another major to his list of wins when he won the golfer of the year final on Sunday. In a thrilling final, he beat Ciarán Cuddihy on the 19th having overcome Tim Quinlivan in the semi-final. In the other semi-final Cuddihy beat Denis Noonan. Well done Dermot.
Well done to Paul Murphy who put up a great performance in the South of Ireland Championship in Lahinch. Having qualified on the mark, he won his first two rounds in great style. In the third round he was one up after 15 holes against Irish international Alex Gleeson (Castle) but lost on the 18th. Open week continues until Sunday.
ROSSLARE LADIES
In the commercial world the last week in Rosslare would be called Christmas week, but for us it was ladies’ open week. But before that on Saturday, July 29, we had our Mid-Summer Cup which was a new event for the club.
It was a singles competition, where a lady or gent could win, but the ladies, being the fairer sex, were given a bonus of two points. So we were delighted when Susan Evans was the first-ever winner and a lady!
She truly deserves her name there as she has consistently played beautiful golf all year. We then enjoyed a fab barbeque, followed by disco dancing!
Next, the buzz of open week...so many visitors, our holiday members from Dublin and surrounding counties and the regulars. So many winners they can’t all be written about individually but detailed results are below.
It started on Monday with a singles competition sponsored by French Connection Boutique, with a happy start for Ruth Deeny with a hole-in-one. It was won by our local Jane O’Shea (39 points), who loves her fashion and was delighted with her most generous voucher for her favorite boutique. In the evening, there was a packed house for Noreen’s annual fashion show...wonderful style!
Tuesday was a fourball sponsored by Caterhire with lovely prizes from the Pro Shop. Winners were Eileen Doyle and Margaret Mangan with 43 points.
Wednesday was singles - sponsored by Murphy’s SuperValu - and every prize-winner could have hosted a party with their fabulous hampers. A thrilled Catherine Haugh won first prize, well ahead of everyone on such a windy day with 39 points and could hardly carry her hamper home it was so heavy!
Thursday was a popular team of three event, with two scores to count, sponsored by our clubhouse caterers. The visitors seemed to mainly win out all prizes on this day, showing there is a chance for everyone.
Friday was a mixed foursomes with gorgeous gifts from Barker’s Gift Shop with 264 playing (a true test for some marriages). A final day and a packed house...we must now leave it to the men.
Only to say, the week was full of wind, rain, fun, friends and fashion and to everyone please come back for more golf during the year.

WEXFORD LADIES
Last week was open week in the club, and it got under way for the women with a mixed foursomes competition on Monday, July 31.
A total of 108 people played and there were visitors from Rosslare, Mahon, Shannon, Enniscorthy, Tramore and Clonmel. The winners of the prizes sponsored by Joyces Expert were: 1, Michael Field and Trish Field (22.5), 66.5; 2, Mark Mullen and Elaine Mullen (10.5), 67.5 (back nine); 3, John Ffrench and Trish Hanton (16.5), 67.5 (back nine). The winning visitors were Michael Corry and Connie Corry (14) with 76.
Last Thursday we welcomed players to the club from Rosslare, Enniscorthy, Blainroe, Dun Laoghaire and Bunclody for an 18-hole open stableford competition sponsored by Hassett’s Chemist. Again, we had some magnificent winning scores.

Belated congratulations to Rachael O’Connor and Ruth Kennedy on the birth of their baby twin boys in July. Unsurprisingly, neither Rachael nor Ruth have not been seen around the golf club since!
WEXFORD
Last weekend saw our President’s prize to the gents played for. On behalf of the members, we would like to sincerely thank our President, Adrian Doyle, for his beautiful prizes.

Deirdre Colfer and Patricia Hanton were the winners in the ladies’ ten-hole competition, while Seán Hopkins and John Cotter showed their skills by winning the putting competition.
Our second open week took place with big numbers playing in the various competitions. Tuesday’s competition was an 18-hole singles. The winner was Billy Roche with 37 points (back nine).
Second place went to Peter Firman, also with 37 points. Joseph Hall took third place with 36 points (back nine). The gross prize was won by Jack Small from Elm Park with 27 points.
The vets. prize went to Seán Kenny with 36 points (back six), and the visitor’s prize went to Paul Kelly from Naas with 34 points. Many thanks to Wexford Golf Club’s Senior section for sponsoring this competition.
Wednesday’s competition was an 18-hole singles sponsored by Musgrave’s Cash and Carry.
