FERRYCARRIG REGATTA
The Ferrycarrig rowing club annual regatta took place on Sunday, July 30. Fr John Carroll performed the traditional blessing of the Slaney Cots prior to the races commencing. Following this, crews made their way to the start line which on the day was not an easy task for the coxes as strong winds made conditions extremely tough.
Rowers as young as 10 years of age took on the strong currents in Ferrycarrig and ‘pulled like dogs’ to make their way along a very tough course. There was a strong representation from all five of the Slaney Rowing Association clubs, which comprises of Ferrycarrig RC, Edermine Ferry RC, Kilurin RC, St Kearns RC and the newly formed Trolls RC.
The committee of Ferrycarrig rowing club under the guidance of chairperson Lorraine Foley put a lot of work into the setting up the regatta, receiving much welcomed help from the parents of Ferrycarrig’s young rowers as well as Declan Power, Eddie Foley, Paul Power and Chris Corley whom facilitated the laying of the course.
The prize giving took place later that day in Mary Jo’s Barntown. Ferrycarrig Rowing Club would like to thank all in Mary Jo’s for their continuing support and like to extend thanks to all that helped with the organising of their regatta.
Ferrycarrig Rowing Club wish all the SRA clubs the very best of luck in the 2017 all-Ireland Rowing Championships taking place in Ballyshannon, Co.Donegal on the 18th to August 20.
SKITTLES RESULTS
TEAM EVENT – Mary Jo’s finished second in the Junior B group which resulted in a playoff against the winners of group A Saltmills in the Junior League semi-finals.
Both teams headed to Powers of Ballycullane for the battle of the sticks. What a battle it was. Saltmills started strong and put up a challenge by taking the first two games – leading with a score of 2: 0. Mary Jo’s took the third game, making the score 2: one. Saltmills, standing strong, kept the upper hand leaving Mary Jo’s trailing with a score of 3: one. With nothing to loose – apart from the semi-finals – Mary Jo’s fought on clawing their way back to a score of 3: two, then drawing level at 3: three. With one final game to go the pressure was on and the craic was mighty. However, the pressure proved to be too much for Saltmills as Mary Jo’s took the final game with a spectacular finish from Eamonn Nobblett. Final Score 3: four.
Mary Jo’s team: Eamonn Nobblett, Pat Hogan, Ray Colfer, Stuart Duggan, Jim Byrne and Aoife Duggan.
Saltmills team: David Ryan, Dick Keating, Eamon Devlin, John Culleton, John Finn and Fintan Whelan.
The second semi-final is due to be played tonight in Ballycullane between Paul Morrisseys and Gusserane. Due to holidays etc the date for the Junior Finals has yet to be decided.
Sunday the 13th will see Senior League team final between Frank Jordans and St Leonards in Carrig-on-Bannow at 4 p.m.
