Local soccer meeting

THE WEXFORD Football League pre-season delegate meeting will be held on Monday, August 28, in the Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy, at 8 p.m. Last week we brought you news of the big signings of Robin Dempsey and Gary Delaney for North End United from Waterford United, and a couple of acquisitions for Gorey Rangers also caught our eye.

Two inter-county G.A.A. players, hurler Conor McDonald and footballer Ben Brosnan, will be assisting the north county crew, although it remains to be seen if they will be first team players or confining themselves to one of the lower divisions.

Regardless of what happens, it can be taken as a certainty that neither will be playing soccer until the campaigns of Naomh Eanna and Castletown conclude on the local club front.

Meanwhile, the FAI referees’ department have announced that a referee beginners’ course will take place in Waterford at the end of the month.

It will be held on Saturday and Sunday, August 26 and 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days in the Regional Sports Centre on the Cork Road.

The fee for the course is €100, and a minimum number of 15 participants will be required in order for it to proceed.
