Games finals this weekend

-

ALL ROADS lead to the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown, Co. Dublin, this coming weekend for the annual festival of Community Games sporting and cultural activities.

This is the 50th anniversary of the founding of the great movement by the late Joe Connolly which took place in Walkinstown, Co. Dublin, in 1967.

This is the first time that the Games finals are being held at the Sports Centre which has some fantastic venues.

For some of us though, the fact that the athletic finals will once again be held on a grass track will be a challenge indeed, now that most of our children have got used to competing in the county finals at The Hub in Enniscorthy.

Traffic will be very busy from around 7 a.m. on Saturday morning, August 19, so please allow plenty of time to get there. Plan your route in advance.

There is limited parking at the Campus, but additional parking will be available at the I.D.A. grounds and a shuttle bus service will be in use.

Events will get under way early on Saturday morning with Wexford competitors involved in the athletic events (on the N.S.C. turf pitch) as well as some field events like the javelin, shot putt and discus for boys and girls.

As well as that we will have children competing in the handwriting competitions for boys and girls. The drama sketch, culture corner, solo music, recitation and group dance competitions will also be taking place.

Wexford will have one team in action, the boys’ Under-13 rounders crew from the Piercestown/ Murrintown Area.

On Sunday morning, it’s back to the athletic track once again for semi-finals and finals, as well as high jump, long puck and long jump events.

Competitors from Wexford will also be involved in the art competitions for boys and girls and in stage events such as solo and group singing and dance.

Area Secretaries should inform all their competitors of the times of their competitions and of course the day they are being held.

The schedule of events is up on the website and can be downloaded, as well as directions for how to get there. An Garda Síochána will be directing traffic and you must follow their instructions.

This year’s competitors from Wexford come from Clongeen, Castlebridge/Crossabeg, Bree/ Davidstown, BBBCR, Clonard, Piercestown-Murrintown, Enniscorthy, Kilanerin, Rathangan, Rathgarogue-Cushinstown, Glynn-Barntown, Taghmon, Craanford, Gorey town, Kilrush-Askamore and Craanford Areas.

We wish each and everyone a very successful weekend. Do your best and please enjoy the occasion.
