Next weekend is a three-man team event sponsored by Price Waterhouse Cooper.

Our Provincial Towns team secured a fantastic result in Headfort in Kells, Co. Meath, by winning six games to three in the first leg of the final.

Headfort got off to a great start, winning three of the first four games, but from then on our lads played some great golf to win every one of the remaining five games.

Declan Byrne, Eddie Doyle, Shane Fortune, Seán Hegarty, Jim Mackey and Davy Murphy won their games with Denis Dunne, Eunan Doyle and James Foley being beaten. Special mention must go to Davy Murphy who made a brilliant birdie on the 18th to win his game.

The return leg is on Sunday, August 20, at 10.15 a.m. at our own course where a big crowd is expected. Congratulations to all players and to the management team of Tim Morrissey and John Byrne.

Everyone involved with the team would like to thank all the caddies and supporters who made the long journey and also to our club professional Stephen Fitzpatrick, Captain Jack Murphy and President Jim Hogan for their support.

Best of luck to both sets of players and to the respective management teams from everyone at Enniscorthy Golf Club.

We have also advanced to our third Barton Cup final since 2008 (proud winners in 2008 and 2011) by beating Killeen last Monday. Hopefully we can go on now to make it three Barton Cup wins.

Martin Sludds and Shane Fortune and Nicky Murphy and Adam Jordan played some absolutely fantastic golf in Enniscorthy to secure two wins at home which were played earlier than the away games. An incredible shot was played from the fairway bunker on the 14th by Martin Sludds which set up a birdie chance which Shane Fortune converted.

However, Killeen were up in all three away games approaching the turn. News would have filtered through about this time and one more victory for Enniscorthy would secure a place in the final.

Spurred on by this news, some fantastic golf of the highest order turned the match in our favour. Having been two down earlier in the match, Paul Lynch and Liam Sheridan secured the all-important third game on the 16th hole.

Paul Conroy and ‘Butch’ O’Connor were three up when called in, and Frankie and James Morrissey had fought back to be only one down when they were called in.

Ardee will be our opponents in the final with the first leg scheduled to be played on Saturday, August 19, in Ardee, and the home leg to come two weeks later.

Congratulations to all players and to the wider panel and to the management team of Paul Connolly, Murt Mangan and Jason Rackard.

It was an incredible weekend for Enniscorthy Golf Club with two great performances on one weekend. To reach two finals in one season is an achievement that everyone involved with the club teams, and indeed everyone in the club as a whole, should be very proud of.

Now to go on and secure two wins in the respective finals. What a party that will be!

A mention too for our ladie’s section who have reached the Midland district final against The Royal Curragh on September 2 in Tramore, a competition for nine to 15 handicappers. Win this and they get to the national final.

The ladies’ open Seniors is on Friday, August 18, starting at 9 a.m., sponsored by Yellow Rose Boutique.

The G.U.I. All-Ireland fourball Leinster finals is on August 20. The Sunday evening mixed will be at 6 p.m. with a shotgun start for members only.

On August 21 the course is closed until 10.30 a.m. due to verti drainage works.

For the full report please look at the club website in the news section.

NEW ROSS

The second big event of our golfing calendar, J.J. Hoyne’s President’s prize, was held over three days and attracted a large entry.

On Friday and Saturday in the qualifying rounds, players enjoyed good weather and the scoring was likewise. However, come Sunday it was a complete change of scenery with incessant rain sweeping across the course, making conditions very trying indeed.

It was going to be a survival of the fittest in the race to claim a much-coveted prize, with only the hardiest of competitors attempting to do so and many withdrawing from the final round altogether.
