NEW ROSS (CONTINUED)

In the end that great old veteran and outstanding clubman, John Murphy (18), playing consistent golf, claimed the trophy with a final total of 73 points (37/36).

Wet and windy weather is not a barrier or deterrent to our John as he was often seen with his gun and his dog hunting wild fowl in hail, rain, gales and snow, and his victory therefore in the prevailing conditions albeit by virtue of a better second 18 was richly deserved.

Three putting the last green was costly for Seamus O’Leary (9) who finished runner-up also on 73 points, whilst another of our veterans, Willie Whitty (18), finished third with 72 points, again courtesy of a better second 18. Fourth place on the same score went to David Feeney (16), and Hugh Behan took the gross with 62 points.

Category 1 went to Jim Larkin (7) with 71 points. Category 2, with 69 points, was won by John Hackett (12), while Category 3 went to Francis Coughlan (70 points) and Category 4 was won by Ger Freyne (19) with 62 points.

The past President’s prize was won by Jim Meggs (15) with 68 points, the veterans by Kevin Treacy (19), scoring 66 points, the first 18 by Mick Logue (20) with a great score of 40 points, and the second 18 by Mick Butler (10) with 34 points.

In the mixed the President himself, J.J. (19), combined with Joanne Hartley (23) and Marie O’Connor (31) to score 44 points and win the first prize. Second went to John Murphy (18), Martin Forristal (20) and Teresa Byrne (20) with 44 points also, and Pat Purcell (18), Miceál O’Neill (20) and Kay Kelleher (25) were third with 41 points.

The Tuesday evening fourball is still going strong and in the latest 14-hole competition sponsored by Sandrose, John Murphy (17) and J.J. Hoyne (19) - where did we hear these names before? - were clear winners with 40 points.

Two points behind on 38 came Colm Kehoe (10) and Eddie Kent (17), whilst James O’Brien (15) and Noel Devine (17) finished third on the same score.

This Tuesday evening, August 15, the sponsors are a group of club members.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

We were off on our last away outing of the season on Tuesday when we visited Faithlegg Golf Club which was in pristine condition and the weather was good too, with plenty of sunshine beaming down on this picturesque course in the Waterford estuary.

Ten teams battled it out and even on a strange course scoring was top class. Many thanks to Karl Cullen and Cathy Griffin at Faithlegg for giving us reduced green fees even though their festival of golf was on last week, and also to our own Denis Kirwan for looking after the team selections, with both adding to the enjoyment.

Taking the honours were Pat Traynor (18), Jimmy O’Neill (19), Patsy Farrell (19) and Liam Glasheen (20) with 90 points. In second place with 86 points came John Browne (12), Billy Redmond (21), Tony Sexton (22) and Les Jastrebski (24), with Willie Byrne (14), Jimmy ‘Ross’ Ryan (17), Aidan O’Connor (20) and Pat Butler (24) third with 84 points.

Fourth place went to a three-person team consisting of Denis Kirwan (12), Larry Shannon (20) and Frank Boyle (23) with 83 points (77+6). Fifth place was secured by Fr. John French (21), John Joe Murray (21), Jamesie Wallace (21) and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan (24) with 83 points, and placed sixth were Tommy Ryan (15), Steve Travis (18), Willie Naddy (20) and Martin Hartley (22) with 82 points.

We are back with our usual game this Thursday, and on Monday, August 21, New Ross will host the Autumn Seniors Alliance open fixture with players from seven outside clubs competing as well as our own contingent.

The first tee is reserved from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the early times allotted to home members. The timesheet is with Jamesie Murphy - text or call on 085-1846172 or e-mail jamesiemurphy@gmail.com. All names must be in by this Thursday in order to finalise the timesheet as it is going to be a busy day.

All those wishing to travel to Ballykisteen on September 12-13 when New Ross is closed should hand in their names on Thursday also. This is the value package of the year, two nights’ B & B, two dinners and two rounds of golf for an incredible €149 – sure, where would you get it on an award-winning championship course?

NEW ROSS LADIES

On Wednesday, August 9, the 18-hole stableford competition was sponsored by Brooks Jewellers, Charles Street, New Ross, and Liz Bennett (9) was claiming her second win in three weeks. Well done Liz.

Results: 1, Liz Bennett (9), 71 nett; 2, Mary Maher (16), 73 nett; gross, Mary Kavanagh, 88; 3, Anne Banville (23), 74 nett.

Next we we play for the Centenary Cup and the prizes are sponsored by Emerald Dry Cleaners, New Ross. Many thanks to Pete and Deirdre Caulfield for their continued support. It is an 18-hole stableford.

On Thursday, August 17, the mixed event for Ann Curtis’ lady President’s prize will start at 3.30 p.m. Hopefully we will see a good turn-out for this special occasion and of course for the fun in the clubhouse afterwards.

This week we are adding a nine-hole competition to the timesheet on Wednesdays. This option is specifically for Seniors, members recuperating after surgery/illness who might find 18 holes too much, and beginners.

It is not a qualifying competition as yet. For the moment the slots will be in the afternoon but this will be reviewed in time. Entry is €5 and we hope that there will be sufficient interest in this option so that we can develop it further.

The Get Into Golf ladies will have a scramble for a prize presented by the lady President, Ann Curtis, this Wednesday evening. More information will be on the Whatsapp group during the week.

The prize will be included then in the prize-giving on Saturday night, August 25. It’s marvellous to see so many ladies playing in the club classic! Thanks to all who sold and bought raffle tickets. Great credit is due to Vice-Captain Martin Carroll and his team for all the time and work they put into the classic.

It would be lovely to see ladies in the clubhouse at 8 p.m. tonight (Tuesday) for the prize-giving and to acknowledge the generosity of Paschal Bolger and all at Culcita. Hopefully this event will grow year on year to become one of the biggest events on our golfing calendar.

The Mary McKenna team had a hard day’s golf in Royal Tara on Thursday, coming away with only one win. However, all is not lost! The home leg of this Leinster final will take place on August 27 when we have another chance to balance the score.

Thank you to all the supporters who travelled the long distance to cheer on the ladies. It was great to see Anthony Connick of our bar staff there to lend support to the team.

Maria Burford, our hard-working handicap secretary who plays off 13, took part in the Mid Leinster championships in Enniscorthy at the weekend. She played really well, getting as far as the semi-final where she was beaten on 19th by the outright winner, Margaret Hearne. Well done Maria, we are very proud of you!
