Relief and joy for Wexford students

- BY SARA GAHAN

STUDENTS, and parents, can now breathe a sigh of relief after 1,971 of them in county Wexford received their Leaving Certificate results after a long wait over the summer months.

For most it felt like only yesterday they were sitting their all-important exams, but now it was a morning of joy and celebration for them as all seemed pleased with their results.

This will be the last time that sixth-year students will burst through the doors of the Loreto Secondary School building for their results, as a new school is on the way for next year.

Loreto student Tamara Dempsey is unsure if she secured her first choice but was still happy with the marks she received. She has her fingers crossed as she wants to study business in UCD.

‘I am pleasantly surprised with what I got, better than expected actually. Hopefully I got enough to do law in DCU, I don’t want to say anymore in case I jinx it,’ said Grace Dowd.

Meg McCormac is delighted with her exam results and is relieved that it is now over. She is patiently waiting for next week to see if she has secured her place in college to study languages.

Even though Aoileann Hourihane is unsure if she got her first choice or not, she is still thrilled with what she got and is looking forward to studying early childhood.

‘It is such a weight off my shoulders, and I am happy with what I got. I want to do arts in Maynooth and then a masters in education so I can teach,’ said Rachel Hayes.

Over in St Peter’s College, the boys rushed inside to school to quickly grab their results after a restless nights sleep from not knowing what was awaiting them.

St Peter’s student Jamie Doran was more than happy as he said that he definitely got his first choice to study languages in UCC.

Cian Fortune did better than he expected and is pretty sure he secured a place with his first choice, where he wants to do auctioneering in DIT.

‘I am very happy with my results, I got the marks I was expecting so it should be enough for me to study computer science either in Maynooth or DCU,’ said Luke Hebblethwaite.

John Doyle, who would like to study hospitality management, said he got better results than he was actually expecting and is thrilled to have done so well.

Principal of St Peter’s College Robert O’Callaghan said: ‘We are very fortunate to have such a great bunch of guys this year, they did very well and I am delighted for them all. I wish them the best of luck in their future careers.’

A new grading system was applied to all subjects for the first time this year, which reduces the number of grades from 14 to eight. There has been no change in the examination standard, but rather students are encouraged more to participate in higher level.

‘It is difficult to tell whether or not this new system is better. But I am still very happy with the students and how they did,’ said Principal of Bridgetown College Fionnuala Greene. In Bridgetown College, Sean Thompson is now looking forward to doing his media course after he received his results, and even did better than he expected.

Liam Flood is eagerly waiting for next week to see if he got enough points to study architecture in either UCC or WIT, but is more than happy with what he got.

‘I am really happy with my results, but even happier that I passed physics as I found it difficult at times,’ said Bridgetown student Jamie Hogan, who looks forward to studying business.

Oisin Furlong was surprised with what he got and thrilled with how he did, while his friend Adam Devereux also did very well and hopes to go to WIT where he will study business and sport.
