ATHLETICS NEWS

It has been a busy time for St Killian’s senior athletes over the last number of weekends. Pádraig Moriarty competed today, Sunday, in the Cloughbawn 5km where he had a great performance to take second place. Brian O’Shaughnessy and Niall Sheil were in Ballindaggin on Friday evening to compete in a 6km race hosted by Slaney Olympic as part of their summer series. Both athletes had good races with Brian finishing in fourth place and Niall taking the win. Brian has been in great form this summer.

Brian competed in the Camolin Woods 5k on August 6 and in a very competitive field finished in another superb fourth place.

Niall travelled to Waterford last weekend and competed in the Eilis Hayes Memorial race hosted by West Waterford Athletic club. Niall had a strong run to finish in second place. This follows on from his excellent performance where he did his club and country proud competing in the European Masters Track and Field Championships. Niall got to the final of the 1500m, came seventh in the cross country race and ninth in the 5k. In both he was only 15 seconds off medalling and he was really mixing it up with some of the best master athletes in Europe.

Don’t forget Oylegate GAA are holding their annual 10k and half marathon races next Sunday. It is always a great event in aid of a good cause so it would be great to see it being well supported.
