FAMILY TO FURNISH SPECIAL ROOM IN HOSPITAL IN ABBIE’S MEMORY
THE family of a 15-year-old girl who died despite the best efforts of doctors and nurses at Wexford General are raising funds to furnish a special room at the hospital for the families of seriously ill people being treated in the Emergency Department.
‘From our experience, this room is vital in the hospital,’ said Eva Troy, sister of Abbie Troy who died in February last year after she became ill with a rare strain of the flu.
The Troy family said they wanted to thank the hospital’s Emergency Department for fighting to try and save Abbie by raising money for the room and to some new equipment, which is much-needed.
A fundraiser ball at the Riverbank House Hotel on October 7, which is being held in the memory of Abbie, has sold out, but the family would like everyone to still donate towards their GoFundMe page for a great cause.
Abbie died suddenly in February 2016 after she fell ill with a rare strain of the common flu virus, that took a healthy and energetic girl away from her family within a matter of hours.
The room will be used for the families of sick patients who can have some privacy, while their loved ones are taken care of in the Emergency Department.
Further to this, if the family reach or even exceed their goal they plan to purchase some medical equipment for the department.
Eva said: ‘Our hope is that families do not have to face the tragedy and heartbreak that we have had to endure. By furnishing this family room and purchasing life-saving equipment, we will all be helping to save someone and their family from a road of grief and loss.’
However, even though the fundraiser ball has sold out Eva said they still need more donations towards the hospital and any amount would be greatly appreciated.
Eva said: ‘We have sold 426 tickets for our ball, so in total we have raised €15,000 but that does not include the money we need to pay for the dinner at the ball. The furnishing and new equipment are costly.’
Their father Tom Troy will also be remembered on the night as he sadly lost his life in April this year.
Point Blank, Intro and DJ Matty will provide music on the night free of charge, while local businesses and well-known Irish bloggers have donated many prizes for the raffle.
Eva said the support they have received so far has been amazing and they are delighted the ball sold out.
