Three cheers as school celebrates a hat-trick
SCOIL Mhuire in Barntown celebrated a rare sporting treble last week with a well-attended and much-deserved civic reception hosted by Wexford Mayor Cllr Jim Moore.
A large number of well-wishers gathered at the Wexford District Council buildings in the old County Hall last Monday (August 28) to honour the school’s Rackard League double ‘ROINN A’ hurling and football winners and victory in the rounders primary school championship.
It was a very impressive performance at the conclusion of the school year to claim a historic hat-trick for Scoil Mhuire.
The football team was managed by Tony Cleary while the hurling was managed by Damien Barron. Willie Carley had the task of playing a pivotal task in the management of both teams, bringing a capability and a passion for both disciplines to the school and the teams.
The rounders management team of Nicola Brazzill, Jennifer Moroney and Caitriona Walsh had much to be proud of on the night as their victory as county school champions for 2017 made for an unprecedented level of silverware in the school’s history.
Rounders has a long history as a sport in Barntown and the management team have a wealth of personal talent and success over many years. The rounders victory celebration at the mayoral reception was all the more sweet in light of the second (in a row) All Ireland victory of the ladies team from Barntown last weekend.
Cllr Moore said he was delighted to honour the achievements of the young and he congratulated the school on the tremendous level of ‘parental involvement’. He also spoke of the ‘uniqueness’ of the triple victory and took the occasion to welcome double Rackard League winner from the 196O’s - musician and fellow Kilmore man - Nick Kinsella.
