WEXFORD WANDERERS

Wexford Wanderers firsts kept alive their hopes of Leinster League glory when they comfortably defeated leaders Bagenalstown by five wickets at Park last Saturday.

This victory sees both sides sharing first place with just one week’s fixtures remaining to be played, with North Kildare and Ringcommon also in the mix.

The toss proved to be vital on the day and home skipper Tony Murray had no hesitation in offering the visitors first use of the wicket on what was a damp dreary day.

Tony himself was in fine form with ball in hand, returning remarkable figures of three wickets for just five runs off seven overs. He received excellent support from Nithin with three for nine off seven as Bagenalstown were bundled out for 110 runs.

Batting conditions improved in the second half and Wanderers got off to a good start putting on 20 runs before losing their first wicket. However, two further wickets were soon lost and with the scoreboard on 28 for three, the game was back in the balance.

Umar with 33 runs and Adil with 27 soon got the innings back on track and a hard-hitting innings of 34 not out from Nithin saw Wanderers over the line with five wickets to spare.

Next Saturday at Park, North County provide the opposition and all the team can do is to win on the day and hope results from the other games go in their favour.

SLIABH BUIDHE

On Saturday in Wicklow town, SBR had a 1-2 finish in the Kilomarathon 10k with Myles Gibbons taking top honours in 36:50 and David Leonard next man home in 37:23.

Two very strong performances from the Gorey men. In the 26.2 km Kilomarathon, Eugene Doherty represented SBR well with an 13th place overall in 1:57:37 to win his age category. Well done, men.

Cross Country training continues Tuesday and Thursday nights at the field just outside Ferns. Groups meeting in the Square in Ferns from 6,45pm both nights for road running and cross country. All welcome.

ENNISCORTHY RFC

South East League 2017, Enniscorthy RFC v New Ross RFC

Enniscorthy recorded an easy victory in Round 2 of the South Leinster league over near neighbours New Ross last Sunday at the Ross Road scoring 10 tries in all and conceding after 15 minutes.

When scrum half Evan Lett touched down after 15 minutes for their first score the result was never in doubt.

To be fair, the New Ross pack did try hard and provided stiff opposition particularly in the first half. Their backs however were no match for the speedy Enniscorthy attack.

Enniscorthy will have a much tougher test next Saturday when they face Dundalk at home in the first round of the Leinster League at 3pm.

Enniscorthy try scorers were David O’Dwyer (3), Ivan Jacob (2), Ross Barbour (2), Evan Lett, Joe Bulmer and Murt Kehoe.

Team: 1. Angelo Todisco, 2. David Murphy, 3. Pat Doyle, 4. Joe Bulmer, 5. Tomas Stamp, 6. Murt Kehoe, 7. Jamie Barron, 8. Tom Ryan, 9. Evan Lett, 10. Ivan Poole (Capt), 11. David Shore, 12. Daniel Pim, 13. Ross Barbour, 14. Ivan Jacob, 15. David O’Dwyer.

Subs all used: 16. David Farrar, 17. Sabastian Pim, 18. Michael Farrell, 19. Paddy Waters, 20. Tom Farrar.

ADAMSTOWN AC

Now in its 11th year, Adamstown AC Open Cross Country has established itself as a top class early season opener for the Cross Country Season, this year attracted 34 clubs from Counties Wexford, Wicklow, Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Limerick and Dublin. Most athletes arrived in Adamstown to get a feel for the coming season cross country, test their fitness and size out the opposition.

The day started with 31 tiny tots, indicating great promise for the continued success of Adamstown AC, who this year are among the small select few clubs in Ireland than can boast two national Senior men track and field titles.

The more serious races started on the chime of the 12 bells of Adamstown church by national and internationally renowned starter Pat O’Leary.

Races were hotly contended and no medals were easily won for the two hours of races program.

Race Director and Chairperson of Adamstown Ac Edel English was delighted with the standard of competition, commenting, “Every medal won was hard earned, with no athlete taking off their foot off the pedal till they were safely across the line”.

Edel said she would expect to see the top three athletes in each event here today, on the start line of the Juvenile National Cross Country Championship in December such was the high standard of competition, noting that each athlete would have to win their way through their own county and province before they could earn their place on the start line of a national championships.

Adamstown Ac would like to thank land owners the Rothwell family, Adamstown, the generous sponsors Mr Oil and Cullens Gala Adamstown and the support of Wexford Sports Active to ensuring the continued success of the event.

The club senior ladies team had a great day with Elaine O’Donovan finishing first, Maria Griffin second, Mary Doolan sixth and Maggie Helen O’Connor tenth.

The 37th year of the St Joseph’s School Shield took place last Friday evening, with a large number of athletes running to represent their National Schools.

The five local schools represented were Ballyfacey, St Canices, Listerlin, Shanbogh and Glenmore all hoping to win the Mick Curran Shield.

Final results showed Glenmore winning with 101 points with Listerlin in second place with 67 points followed by St Canices, Shanbogh and Ballyfacey.

This is the 11th year in a row that the Shield has gone to Glenmore National School, so well done to them for turning up in such big numbers again.
