Stripe Pal follows in his kennel companion’s place GREYHOUNDS

-

THERE WAS a very good night’s racing on offer at Enniscorthy dog track last Thursday featuring the final of the Horse and Hound Tri Distance, and it proved to be an excellent race despite the inclement weather.

The impressive heat and semi-final winner, Stripe Mary, went off hot favourite but she had to overcome trap six this time and she missed the break.

It was left to kennel companion Stripe Pal to take up the challenge and he made a very bold bid, breaking well to lead.

The Joe Anglim-owned Tullycanna Dot, who was noticed finishing fast in the previous week’s semi, was in close contention this time and made his move down the back to challenge Stripe.

It was a matter of who stayed the extra trip best as they faced the judge, and Tullycanna prevailed by a length to take the nice €1,500 prize in a good 31.58 for the 575 yards.

The final of the Piercestown Sand A1/2 Stake was also decided, and young Philip Tierney of Kilmore enjoyed a great win as his 54-pound bitch Bugatti Petite showed her much larger rivals a clean pair of paws.

She accelerated just like the car she is named after from traps and she had no difficulty winning this €800 final in a good 28.95, proving good goods do come in small packages as she was recording her eighth career win.

The final race of the night saw a fine run from the Patrick Whelan (Enniscorthy)-owned Indian Attack who flew the lids and proved a length and a half too strong for Rocky Dee Rocket in a very fast 28.68.

Two of the three Co. Wexford challengers in the Sporting Press Irish Oaks at Shelbourne on Saturday night went through to this week’s third round as Collage Jade and Airdown Rena finished second and third in their heats. The Oaks continues this Saturday night.

The Red Mills Future Champions unraced stake is the highlight of the year. Regarded as one of the top novice stakes in the country, it will start next Monday night, October 9.
