Two from two for Gorey ladies

GOREY HEADED into Sunday’s home ladies’ rugby fixture with Clondalkin lifted by the previous week’s win away to Tullow.

The game started at a hectic pace with both sides attempting to make a breakthrough.

However, to follow the theme of the first two games of the season for Gorey, defences were on top for the majority of the first-half.

A crossfield wind and a slippery ball also hindered both sides in attack. Gorey scored the only points of the first-half.

A Clondalkin clearing kick was gathered by Lorraine Gahan who produced a fine run to just over halfway where the Clondalkin defence managed to turn over the ball.

However, in the next phase they knocked on and Caoimhe Molloy gathered the ball and made a run forward before passing to the supporting player, Anna Nolan, who finished off the move by scoring the try in the corner. The half-time score was Gorey 5, Clondalkin 0.

The second-half started in a similar manner with both defences proving difficult to break down. Clondalkin applied some early pressure but Gorey scored next.

Some strong carries from the Gorey pack created the space out wide, and after some quick passing Triona Murray crossed over the line to dot down for the try.

From the re-start again the game ebbed and flowed with both sides looking to make a breakthrough. Gorey launched an attack with some strong carries from Valerie Conyard and Eimear Hickey creating space out wide which allowed Helena Scanlon to score her first try for the club.

The game re-started with defences back on top. However, Gorey made a good break through the middle and the Clondalkin defence had worked hard to turn over the ball.

The clearing kick unfortunately sliced off the kicker’s foot and ended up in the arms of Triona Murray whose footwork caught the Clondalkin defence out, and she crossed over for the try in the corner.

Clondalkin kept applying pressure on the Gorey defence and were determined to get on the score board, and it paid off with the last play of the game.

Some strong carries from the pack created the space out wide to allow Amanda Madden to cross over the line and score the try, making the final score Gorey 20, Clondalkin 5.
