Cells snag at new HQ
THERE was a delay of a few days in prisoners being provided with cell space at Wexford’s showpiece new garda headquarters.
While the new building opened on time two weeks ago, the first prisoners were only admitted to the state-of-the art cells last Tuesday.
In the meantime, prisoners, including those appearing at court, had to be taken to Enniscorthy garda barracks.
‘We wanted to make sure everything was correct,’ said Inspector Denis Whelan.
‘Like everything else in a new building, you have your snag list. There was nothing untoward, it was given that legislation and the detention of prisoners is of paramount importance, we had to ensure everything meets the required standards.’
Inspector Whelan said the cells were now operational and the first prisoners were put up in them at the start of last week.
