WITH the weather turning colder and wetter and the evenings getting longer, it’s a good time to give your vehicle the onceover to make sure everything is in order. And with Irish Road Safety Week taking place until this Sunday, October 9, there’s no time like the present!

The AA provides the following ten simple checks every driver can carry out on a regular basis.

Every two weeks, check your tyre pressures and the condition of your tyres. Look out for cuts or wear and make sure the tread depth is within the legal limits.

If your car has a spare wheel, then make sure that there’s a jack and wheel removing tool (plus a locking wheel nut if needed) in the vehicle.

Use the dipstick to check oil levels every couple of weeks and before long journeys. Top up if needed but it may need a mechanic’s attention if you’re topping up a lot.

Every week, while the engine is cold, check the coolant level is between the minimum and maximum marks and, especially at this time of year, get your anti-freeze checked and topped-up if needed.

Replace wipers if smearing or not clearing the windscreen.

Keep you screenwash regularly topped up with a good additive (one that prevents it from freezing and clears grime).

Get any chips repaired immediately before they grow into a crack. If the damage can’t be repaired, the windscreen will need to be replaced.

Check all your lights – including indicators, reversing lights, brake lights and fog lights – once a week and get blown bulbs replaced.

Make sure your mechanic fills the hydraulic fluid reservoir when servicing the car then check its levels once a month. Give car panels the occasional once-over for signs of damage or rust.
