Senior cross-country in Ferns Sunday

-

THE MR Oil Wexford Juvenile (uneven ages) and Senior cross-country championships take place in Ferns on Sunday (October 15). The event is hosted by S.B.R.

Juvenile events commence at 12 noon (with the Under-9 non-championship race starting at 11.50 a.m.). The Senior ladies’ race has a start time of 2 p.m. (and not before).

Jackie Carthy will be favoured to take the Senior ladies’ title again although Fiona Kehoe (Kilmore) and Ciara Wilson (D.M.P.) may have something to say about that!

And while Kilmore are the current team title-holders, both Slaney Olympic and D.M.P. will be hoping to use their strength back through the field to deny them this year.

The main contenders in the men’s Senior race are Niall Sheil, Tom Hogan, Ger Forde and steeplechase specialist Enda Cloake.

Last year’s winners of the team title, S.B.R., will face strong opposition from Slaney Olympic and United Striders.

John Moore drafted in local legend Tommy McElwaine to assist with the design of the course. It should therefore come as no surprise that the course the pair settled on is described as ‘testing’!

A welcome development this year is the decision to open the Senior races to all-comers. This will not affect the placings for county championships.

Meanwhile, it has just been announced that Adamstown has been chosen as the location for the Leinster Juvenile (uneven ages) and Senior cross-country championships on November 12. The event will be on held on the Showground fields.
