WEXFORD HOCKEY
Wexford firsts made their first away journey to Dublin to take on Avoca in the Leinster League.
Wexford truly are stepping into the unknown and have no idea what these new opponents have to offer.
For each game Wexford must bring their ‘A’ game and they certainly did so on Sunday as they gave a great team performance. From the first whistle Wexford settled quickest and their experience shone through as they passed the ball with ease around the pitch.
Wexford have been playing together for many years and this was probably the biggest advantage as they gelled together and created opportunities to score.
It wasn’t long before Wexford were off the mark, with Miriam Lambert registering her first goal of the season.
Muireann McCarthy was next up to score as she collected a perfect pass from Deirdre Bolger, skilfully rounded the ‘keeper and calmly slotted it home. Wexford went in at half-time 2-0 up.
The second-half continued in a similar vein, and to Avoca’s credit they were quickest to get going and put Wexford’s back line to the test.
Luckily captain Sinéad McDonnell was on hand to stop them in their tracks, assisted by her strong defensive line.
Ten minutes into the second-half Wexford got going again and managed to secure four short corners and converted four, with goals from Avril Jones, Ciara Pettitt and Miriam Lambert (two).
This was a great team performance and hopefully Wexford success will continue throughout the season. Thanks to Kai Gahan who assisted as coach in the absence of usual coach Dave Williamson.
Team: Anna Hayes, Sinéad McDonnell, Joanne Grant, Leonie Grant, Avril Jones, Muireann McCarthy, Ciara McGrath, Ciara Pettitt, Deirdre Bolger, Miriam Lambert, Catríona Corcoran, Chloe O’Connor.

WANDERERS CRICKET
Following the conclusion of the 2017 playing season, Wexford Wanderers firsts have finished in second place in Division 7 of what is a 16-division Leinster League structure and will now compete in Division 6 next year.
Wanderers and Bagenalstown finished on identical wins and losses but the County Carlow side ended up taking the league title by securing just one extra bonus point throughout the whole season.
Skipper Tony Murray deserves great credit for the huge personal effort he put into the campaign. The team was considerably strengthened by the arrival of a number of players from Waterford, and they played an important role in what has been Wanderers’ most successful season for many years.

E’CORTHY RUGBY
It was a good weekend for Enniscorthy Youth teams.
The Under-13s put up a big score on New Ross, 47-0 in the South-East League, and the Under-15s had a fine 12-3 win over Tullow in Ross Road.
Tullow pushed Enniscorthy right back from the start as the home team made a lot of uncharacteristic errors. They eventually settled with Arron Doyle, Chris O’Leary and Ore Lassissi to the fore.
It was hard to believe that neither side could find a score in that opening half.
Tullow’s Liam O’Neill opened the second-half with a well-struck penalty goal.
Enniscorthy finally made the breakthrough when James Doyle made a fine line break and his lovely off-load saw the supporting Stefen San Augustin score the try under the posts. Conal Kervick added the conversion.
Enniscorthy did dominate the final exchanges and they scored their second try when Conor Murphy finished off a move in the corner. Next week they are away to Carlow.
The Under-16s recorded their first win of the season when they accounted for visitors Birr in the Leinster League 36-27. They made a horrible start and were 19 points down after just 15 minutes.
They dusted themselves down and gradually clawed their way back into the game with some superb scores. They did have to thank Leo Durnan who made a crucial tackle just before the final whistle back on his own line.
The try scorers were Cedric Aucher (two), Conor Murphy (two), Cian Walsh and Daniel Pong. Ciaran Breen added three conversions.
The Under-17s continued their unbeaten start to the season when they beat Boyne at Ross Road on Sunday. They were by far the better team but drifted for long periods and almost allowed Boyne to snatch a draw. They did prevail and won 22-17 in the Leinster League.
They started really well with the outstanding Conor Byrne scoring an opening try, and for good measure Cian Cloke added a second.
Boyne would not go away, however, and their response was swift as they closed the gap. Jack Saunders scored another try after a driving maul from a five-metre line-out. Ben Kidd kicked the conversion but Boyne bounced back to level again.
Enniscorthy were inspired by the ball-carrying of man of the match Tom Mannion and were rewarded with the crucial fourth try. It was a combination of forward and back play with the ball eventually going out to the backs and right wing Tadhg Maher blasting over in the corner to secure the win.
The Under-18s, who are joined with Wexford Wanderers, had an excellent 37-33 win in Naas.
Two matches were played by the Enniscorthy under-age girls’ teams last weekend.
On Saturday the Under-18 girls played Tullow and lost 17-14.
On Sunday the Under-16 girls also took on Tullow who excelled in a very tough match, winning 54-12.
Both matches were hard-fought and very exciting. Well done to Tullow on their wins.
