A day of excitement as fire engines visit

- By MARIA PEPPER

DRAMA was in plentiful supply at Carroreigh primary school when two big red fire engines arrived with sirens blaring in the middle of a fire drill and rescued a teacher and pupil ‘trapped’ in a classroom.

The visit by fire fighters from Wexford Fire Service was kept a secret from the school’s 128 pupils who could hardly contain their excitement when the uniformed crews arrived to mark National Fire Safety Week.

The school fire alarm went off shortly before the fire engines drove into the yard and pupils and teachers were evacuating the building as they turned up. On arrival, fire personnel rushed into the building to ‘save’ third class pupil Tiernan Ruane and teacher Keelin Egan who were in a classroom. Tiernan was brought out on a stretcher.

Delighted pupils were allowed into the fire engines and shown the water tanks and cutting equipment. The children were allowed to watch as fire fighters activated the water hoses and there were plenty of squeals as sprays of water fell on them.

Every year, 3rd class pupils in Carroreigh school are brought on a visit to the Wexford fire station in Clonard where they are given a talk on fire safety.
