ANIMAL CRACKERS WSPCA is inundated with abandoned dogs and cats

- By DAVID TUCKER

THE WSPCA has been inundated with animals of all shapes and sizes, many of them dogs, cats and kittens abandoned by their owners.

‘I’m at the end of my tether. It’s really bad at the moment,’ said Brigid Cullen, from Wexford SPCA, who is personally taking care of more than a dozen abandoned kittens at her own home.

She said there were nine dogs, a cat and six kittens at the WSPCA centre on Distillery Road as well as a large number of animals farmed out at the homes of society staff and helpers.

‘Every cat costs €7 a night and every dog costs €10,’ she said, adding that there seemed no end to the numbers of animals being dumped around the town and district.

Brigid said another problem was that despite campaigns to spey dogs and cats at subsidised prices, there were few takers.

‘We end up getting pups suffering from malnutrition because people will not their bitches speyed, and are unwilling or unable to afford to feed the litters,’ she said.

The was also a very low uptake in people taking up an offer to microp their dogs, despite a local advertising campaign offering the service for €25 instead of €75.

‘We literally had to go from door-to-door and even then they wouldn’t do it.’

The WSPCA is a registered charity that is totally reliant on donations to take car of the many animals it takes in. If you are able to help or offer donations, call 053 9143919.
