JIM AND EMMA TOP SPEAKERS AT AREA FINAL

- By DAVID TUCKER

WEXFORD Toastmasters recently held an open night at Wexford Harbour Boat and Tennis Club.

The well-attended get-together provided would-be members an opportunity to chat to those already in the group about the benefits of becoming a toastmaster, of which there are many.

And a few days later, a large audience attended the area final of the Toastmasters humorous speech contest – hosted by Gorey Toastmasters in the Coachhouse, Gorey.

Congratulations went to Emer Mulhall and Jim Cowman who dazzled the crowd with their speeches.

Emer won the first prize in the ‘humorous speech’ contest, with ‘Speak Properly’, a parody and celebration of Irish accents and dialects.

Jim’s first-prize performance came in the ‘table topics’ contest. Table topics are impromptu speeches. The speaker is given a topic and they have to think quickly on their feet. Jim’s topic was ‘a watched kettle never boils’.

Wexford Toastmasters president Emma Reeves said: ‘We in Wexford Toastmasters have heard them speak many times and know how good they are.

‘When our members compete in speaking contests they get to see what the best are doing and to reach for that themselves,’ she said.

Wexford Toastmasters Club marked its eighth anniversary this year. The club provides a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.

The club meets on the first and third Thursday of the month at 8 p.m. in Wexford Harbour Boat and Tennis Club. For more information, look them up on Facebook.
