Eye-catching show of speed from Burgess Brandy GREYHOUNDS

-

THE STORM delayed the running of the second round of the Red Mills Future Champion Unraced Stake until Tuesday night at Enniscorthy Dog Track.

And although it was disappointing that three of the first round winners didn’t take to traps, some very good performances were still recorded, with outstanding displays from the two runners we tipped up after the previous week’s first round.

Burgess Brandy put in an eye-catching show of speed and powerful running when taking heat two in a superb 28.58, while in heat three Running Senor was also very impressive, recording a best of the night 28.53.

There was some hard luck stories too, and this stake is really hotting up.

The Vimmerby @Stud Consolation Stake also took place with three heats run, and there was a fine double recorded by the Piercestown runners from ‘Shanks’ Whelan’s kennel.

Moon took heat one in a fast 28.85 while Lord went a small bit quicker in heat three, recording 28.83.

However, heat two saw the quickest run of the three as Brave Hawk, owned by Willie O’Connor, just did enough to hold Make Six by three-quarters of a length in a good 28.69.

This week’s semi-finals of both stakes look outstanding, and Enniscorthy is the place to be to witness a future champion.

October 17 results - race one, Vimmerby @ Stud Consolation round one, heat one: 1, Piercestowm Moon (owner, Seamus Whelan, Piercestown), 28.85; 2, Jacobs Deed, 29.23.

Race two, Vimmerby @ Stud Consolation round one, heat two: 1, Brave Hawk (owner, Willie O’Connor, Co. Kilkenny), 28.69; 2, Make Six, 28.74.

Race three, Vimmerby @ Stud Consolation round one, heat three: 1, Piercestown Lord (owner, Seamus Whelan), 28.82; 2, Beaming Mix Up, 29.03.

Race four, Red Mills Future Champion Unraced 525 round two, heat one: 1, Doggy Mcdogface (owners, The Dogfathers Syndicate; trainer, Declan Byrne), 28.84; 2, Kingsmill Sprite, 29.36.

Doggy was again fast away as he was the previous week, and it seems his main weapon as he recorded another snug win here.

Kingsmill missed the break and received a bad enough knock at the first bend trying to get around the outside of the runners before running on well to grab the runner-up spot.

Race five, Red Mills Future Champion Unraced 525 round two, heat two: 1, Burgess Brandy (owners, Sheila Spillane and J.J. Fennelly, Co. Cork), 28.58; 2, Poets Corner, 28.96.

Burgess is still a little green and moved to his right in his eagerness to get out of traps.

He was again powerful down the back and ran out a very clear winner and looks a real star of the future.

Poets, badly drawn in trap six, was impeded at the first bend and did very well to get up for second. There’s more to come from this one also with a clear run.

Race six, Red Mills Future Champion Unraced 525 round two, heat three: 1, Running Senor (owner, Martin Stafford, Ballymitty), 28.53; 2, Badminton Ronan, 29.02.

Impressive Senor put in a very professional run and was powerful from halfway also to score easily. Badminton had no answer to the winner on this occasion anyway.

Race seven, Red Mills Future Champion Unraced 525 round two, heat four: 1, East Coast (owner, John Kehoe, Clonroche), 28.81; 2, Tarsna Jo, 28.82.

East Coast’s early burst was the decisive factor in this heat. The victor led all the way, but was all out to hold the strong finish of the fast-learning Tarsna Jo.

There’s more improvement to come from the runner-up.
