Driver doing 141 km/h nearing roundabout

A MOTORIST was clocked driving at 141km/h in Wexford last Monday morning as part of a garda crackdown on speeding.

A tweet issued from its official Twitter account last Monday morning at 10.23 a.m. gardai said Wexford gardai stopped a driver doing 141km/h in 100km/h zone approachin­g a roundabout.

The incident followed on from a National Slowdown Day which saw a number of drivers across the county being prosecuted for speeding.

During the 24 hours of Operation Slow Down, Gardaí and GoSafe checked the speed of 140,223 vehicles nationwide and detected 225 vehicles travelling in excess of the applicable speed limit. In Wexford notable incidents included: a motorist driving at 119km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N25 at Begerin (Loftus), New Ross; a motorist driving at 117km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N11 at Clauass, Enniscorth­y; a motorist driving at 114 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the R733 Ballyknock, Ballymitty. a motorist driving at 92km/h in a 80km/h zone on the R741 at Coolnahinc­h, Gorey; a motorist driving at 114km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N11 at Bayland, Camolin; a motorist driving at 109km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N25 Coolcots and a motorist driving at 93km/h in a 100km/h Zone on the N25 at Coolcots, where applicable speed limit for truck/ bus/vehicle towing is 80km/h.

Chief Superinten­dent Finbarr Murphy of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau said there was full compliance at N11 Kereight, Crossabeg; N11 Killagoley, Enniscorth­y; R730 Killurin, Enniscorth­y and the R742 Killeagh, Blackwater.

The national speed enforcemen­t operation took place from October 20 until October 21 and was a planned operation.

The objective was to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on the nation’s roads. The aim of ‘Slow Down day’ was to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, increase compliance with speed limits and act as a deterrent to driving at excessive or inappropri­ate speed.

Gardai urged motorists to slow down and drive safely.
