Road re-surfacing work due soon in Mayglass village

-

WORK is due to begin soon on the re-surfacing of a 600 metre stretch of road in Mayglass village which is being funded by the Local Involvment Scheme.

Cllr. Frank Staples who has been fighting for road improvement works in the area, was informed at a Council meeting that a new allocation of €6,000 is being provided under the scheme in addition to finance already set aside. The initial allocation was given last year as part of a €50,000 increase to the Wexford district arising from a hike in the Local Property Tax.The re-surfacing contract is due to start within the next month, weather permitting. FIANNA Fail councillor Lisa McDonald said she is ‘getting sick’ of highlighting the dangerous state of footpaths in Rowe Street.

Cllr. McDonald told a Borough District Council meeting that there was another accident in the area a fortnight ago when an elderly lady tripped and fell.

‘I’ve raised it so many times it’s becoming embarrassing. It’s a terrible situation when you have elderly people falling on a footpath leading to the Main Street of the town’ said the councillor who was promised the footpaths would be re-surfaced before the Opera Festival.

Borough Engineer Sean Kavanagh said Siro and Virgin Media had been working in the street and ran into unforeseen difficulties.

‘I had hoped the work would be done before the Opera Festival but I’m optimistic that we might get the footpaths done before Christmas,’ he said.
