NEW ROSS

Due to the great help of the many volunteers who cleaned up the mess left by Hurricane Ophelia, the course was ready for the weekend stableford competition. They did tremendous work and the thanks of all goes to them for their time and effort.

There were many trees felled by the storm but thankfully all the greens avoided damage and the course itself escaped relatively unscathed.

Some good scores were returned, none better than that by the winner of the competition, Seamus Aldridge (10), who brought in an excellent 41 points.

He barely pipped the Duncannon man, Jamesie Wallace (22), who finished with 40 points, whilst Seán Diskin (16) took third place with 38 points after a countback over the last three holes. The gross prize went to John O’Connor with 31 points.

Martin Kehoe (7) took Category 1 with 37 points, John Howlin (11) was the winner of Category 2 with 38 points, and the Category 3 prize went to Tony Redmond (17) with 38 points also.

All members are reminded that the E.G.M. is on this Friday night with a number of motions down for discussion. Anyone who needs clarification on any of those, please contact the manager, Joe Foran, who will be only too happy to explain them to you.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

We had a delayed start to our outing on Thursday with heavy morning rain pelting down. Thankfully, it cleared and all twelve teams got away and enjoyed a mild, dry day afterwards.

We ran the competition in aid of St. Vincent De Paul and we got a generous response both in entry fees and support for the raffle, the combination of which raised €500 for this deserving cause.

Out on the course the going was tough but with bunkers out of play and placing everywhere some good scores were expected. We were not disappointed as the first two teams home broke the one hundred points target mark.

Taking the accolades and the whiskey were John Murphy (17), Dan Quigley (18), Frank Boyle (20) and Jamesie Wallace (22) with 102 points. Only a point behind (101) and in second place came Willie Byrne (15), Eamon Delaney (16), Robert O’Dwyer (21) and Jim Kehoe (25).

The third spot went to a three-person team composed of Tom Murphy (16), Paddy Bennett (19) and Fr. Jim Curtis (22), with the trio shooting 99 points (93+6). Nearest the pin prizes were won by Willie Byrne on the ninth hole and John Murphy on the eleventh.

Our raffle winners were Kenny Irwin, Tony Redmond, Kevin Treacy, Fr. Jim Curtis, Frank Boyle, Tony Wallace, Steve Travis, John Murphy and Brian Dolan. Many thanks to our generous sponsors of the raffle prizes, Dermot Kehoe Ltd., Molloy’s SuperValu, Glanbia and Brian Bailey - your kind support was much appreciated.

On the draw board for November are Larry Shannon, Willie Naddy and Jim ‘Ross’ Ryan. The draw for teams is at 9.40 a.m. sharp each Thursday.

The final medal competition of the year was played in Rosslare on Sunday week.

ROSSLARE LADIES

Last Tuesday was to be our last 18-hole competition and a reverse rumble team of three (all scores on first six holes, two scores on middle six holes, and one score on last six holes).

However, when we all got out of bed and peaked out the window, many returned straight back to bed or met for coffee. In the end the weather did clear up and the competition was played over twelve holes.

There are always those who will brave any weather, and 13 teams played with everyone having a spell in the rain. Well done to Joan Wallace, Geraldine Roche and Trish Devereux who came first with 52 points.

The last of the club matchplay competitions (fourball) has finally been completed. Paula Stafford and Catherine Haugh beat Miriam Geraghty and Catherine Young to make the final, while Eleanor O’Connor and Catherine Howard beat Brigid Doyle and Jane O’Shea to advance... and oh, what a final!

Paula and Catherine were three up on the sixth, two up after the ninth, three up after the tenth, three up going into the 14th. Then Eleanor and Catherine won the 14th, all square on the 15th.

Now two down, they won the 16th and 17th to make both teams all square. Then darkness came, and they decided to wait until Monday morning, daylight and fresh after the weekend to resume the match.

The 18th hole was played and all square, and on the 19th Paula putted a ball that went in and then out of the hole. Catherine won with a par on the 20th, leaving Eleanor O’Connor and Catherine Howard as the winners.

On Saturday we had what used to be As v. Bs, locals v. holiday-makers rivalry matchplay competitions. This year the lady locals beat the holiday-makers narrowly 6-5. We (the locals) had to brace ourselves, and put on our best show having been hockeyed last year. By evening, all was back to normal, with dinner, wine and dancing.

Tuesday, November 7, is a singles stableford competiton over 14 holes.

Tuesday, October 24, team of three reverse rumble (twelve holes): 1, Joan Wallace (17/11), Geraldine Roche (21/14), Trish Devereux (21/14), 52 points.

COURTOWN

The Lunar golf which was played on Friday proved to be a great success, and most of those who took part say that they cannot wait for the next one.

It was a four-person team event with two teams starting on each of the nine holes that were played. Unfortunately, when I went to get the results of this event they were like the third secret of Fatima so I have nothing to report except that it was enjoyed by all.

Wednesday sweep, October 25: 1, Eric Nunan (20), 29 points; 2, Darragh Hobbs (4), 29 - 1 = 28 points; 3, John G. Kinsella (18), 27 points (last three); 4, Liam Flynn (16), 27 points (last nine).

The two-person team event on Saturday and Sunday was one with a slight difference, a 15-hole competition with both players to score on every second hole.

Results: 1, Donal Sheehan (16), Paul Keogh (14), 51 points; 2, Niall Murray (11), David Kennedy (13), 50 points; 3, Rory Farrell (14), Nick Noblet (15), 49 points.

Next weekend’s competition will be a ladies’ and gents’ turkey singles, and it will also be the third round of the Colman Doyle Finance winter league. Please remember to return two cards if you are playing in both competitions.

On Saturday evening our Captains, Laura Funge and John Fitzgerald, will host their Captains’ dinner. This is really good value with a three-course meal followed by entertainment for only €30 per person.
