Colfer brothers make it a double act in Opera House
It must be a first to have two brothers presenting separate plays at the National Opera House in Wexford within a few weeks of each other.
Bestselling children’s author Eoin Colfer was in the prestigious High Street venue during the Opera Festival when his play ‘My Real Life’ starring Don Wycherley and directed by former Abbey Theatre artistic director Ben Barnes, enjoyed a successful four night run over two weekends.
Now it’s the turn of his brother Eamonn, a film and documentary maker turned playwright who made his theatre debut with two one-act plays in Wexford Arts Centre in 2015, followed up last year by the one-act play Dumpton in Fusion Cafe during the Opera Festival.
Eamonn’s new play The Breakwater will run at the Jerome Hynes Theatre in the National Opera House from this Thursday, November 9 to Sunday, November 12 at 8 pm each night. The 50-minute one-man show tells the story of Hyper Monroe, a man who has been exiled from the town to the breakwater where he conducts one-sided conversations with the woman he left behind, the friend who escaped without him and the man who put him there in the first place. Monroe is played by Ronán P Byrne who has been a stage actor for over 20 years. His most recent work includes Stolen Child for which he won the Best Actor Award in the 2015 All-Ireland Drama Festival, The Kill God and the Secret Fall of Constance Wilde.
