REVIEWS FROM SOME GREAT ENTERTAINMENT IN WEXFORD PJ reaches ‘the wrong side of 40’

- By PÁDRAIG BYRNE

REMEMBER PJ Gallagher? Somehow it’s been 13 years since he was prancing around our screens a newspaper fooling members of the public on ‘Naked Camera’. The show was a huge hit and saw the Dubliner rocket to fame. The thing about hidden camera shows is that eventually, they become victims of their own success – you can’t fool the public forever.

While PJ, pictured right, has remained active in the intervening years, he perhaps hasn’t been quite a visible to audiences outside of Dublin.

Nowadays, however, he seems to be enjoying a big resurgence. The popularity of his breakfast radio show on 4fm in the capital, his ‘Dubland’ podcast with Suzanne Kane and the runaway success of his film ‘Young Offenders’, which is now being made into a series, all mean that PJ is back!

There wasn’t a chair to be had in the Spiegeltent in Wexford as the headliner came to the stage. Gallagher almost looks unrecognisable from the ‘Naked Camera’ days too. Covered in tattoos and looking like he regularly picks up heavy stuff in the gym, he’s gone through a major change in the intervening years.

A common theme for comedians of his vintage, ‘Dickhead’ focused on reaching ‘the wrong side of 40’ and looking back over his life.

A natural born storyteller, PJ had the audience in stitches with stories of how his father tried to give him away to the Travellers, how the nature of lovemaking changes with marriage and how, now that he’s over 40, a visit to the doctors always results in a sore bum!

Just a naturally funny guy, the show went down extremely well with the crowd and showed that there’s most definitely more to this lad than ‘Naked Camera’.

• PJ Gallagher will be in the Ashdown Park in Gorey on Friday, November 24, at 8.30 p.m.
