Enniscorthy seconds best

-

THE GOREY J2s were also at home to Enniscorthy on Saturday, and in an entertaining game they lost out on a score of 22-17.

Again Gorey’s inability to start well was to come back to haunt them. Enniscorthy started the better and with seven minutes on the clock scored out wide when they crossed for the opening try.

The Gorey response came in the 14th minute as they worked the ball up field to arrive just outside the visitors’ ’22.

Seamus Tomkins popped a clever kick into the corner for centre Paul O’Connor to level the game.

Within minutes Ennisccorthy had restored their lead when Gorey knocked on as they ran the ball out of their half. Jack Kelly picked up and quick hands saw Enniscorthy run in try number two.

The score of 10-5 was how it remained until the last few minutes of the half. An Enniscorthy scrum just inside the Gorey half was not cause for concern, but when the scrum-half picked he evaded at least two would-be tacklers to run in and extend their lead to 15-5.

Gorey started the second-half hoping to again overhaul a twoscore lead.

Within the first five minutes they had reduced that to one score when Ben Mason touched down.

But five minutes later Enniscorthy restored their lead with another try and also added the conversion to leave twelve between the sides.

Gorey tried hard but the Enniscorthy defence was proving difficult to break down. In the 70th minute they put one score between the sides again when O’Connor popped up to cross for a try, with David O’Neill converting to put just five between the sides.

For the next ten minutes Gorey tried hard but Enniscorthy hung on for a 22-17 win that was really disappointing for the home team as it leaves Boyne with a clear lead in the league at this early stage.

With no games next weekend, Gorey travel to Dundalk on Saturday week.
