The final 18-hole competition of the year took place in Rosslare on Sunday week, a sure sign that winter is fast approaching.
The Billy Kelly Memorial Trophy which is sponsored by Kelly’s Resort Hotel and played as a mixed Scotch foursomes was the competition.
The winners with a 69 were David Banaghan (24) and Penny Gleeson (8). They had birdies at the second and 16th in halves of 43 and 38 and won by one shot from Niall Collins (15) and Vonnie Kelly (9) who had halves of 40 and 39.
Third on 70.75 were Conor Shaw (8) and Francesca Shaw (30). Ted Collins (+ 1) and Ruth Dillon (6) had birdies at the third, eighth and twelfth to win the gross with a 79. Bill Kelly presented the prizes.
Saturday fourball: 1, Seamus (18) and Eamonn Cullimore (24), 44 points; 2, Stephen Healy (10) and Ken Maher (11), 43 points; 3, Paddy Lonergan (12) and Niall McGuinness (17), 42 points.
Monday fourball: 1, Jim Cullimore (7) and Aidan Ryan (11), 46 points; 2, Ger O’Reilly (12) and Tim Murphy (23), 44 points; 3, Anthony Duggan (5) and Mark Fitzpatrick (7), 43 points.
The annual A v. B match, or the Blow-Ins v. Yellow Bellies as it is called this year, was played on Saturday week, with the Yellow Bellies proving too good.
The annual dinner dance followed and was enjoyed by a big crowd.
WEXFORD LADIES
Fifty-one ladies played in the three-person 14-hole reverse waltz competition on October 28 and November 2.
The ‘twinkle-toed’ winners were Margaret Hearne (16), Una Seaver (31) and Ena O’Donohue (32) with 64 points, and second were Louise Boshoff (16), Margaret Atkinson (10) and Una Robinson (18) with 59 points.
The ten-hole winner was Marie Kehoe (35) with 17 points. Nearest the pin was Trina Walsh with 7m 10cm.
The A.G.M. of the ladies’ section will take place on Wednesday, November 22, at 7.30 p.m. in the clubhouse. The minutes of the 2016 A.G.M. are available in the ladies’ locker room along with the committee nominations and proposal sheets.
Rehearsals are starting for this year’s Christmas party show. If you are interested in participating, contact Theresa Kehoe.
This Thursday’s competition is a 14-hole singles stableford.
ROSSLARE LADIES
Last Tuesday was the first competition of the winter where the ladies were reduced to 14 holes and playing for turkeys.
There was a great turn-out of 57 ladies, with six turkeys sorted for Christmas. Well done to Marianne Brennan who came first with 30 points.
Over half-term, on Thursday, November 2, the Junior girls headed off in a bus to Mullingar Golf Club to an I.L.G.U. Festival of Golf. There they had a chance to meet some Golf4Girls4Life ambassadors, some who are playing on Irish teams, play some golf and participate in a skills session. Many thanks to our Junior convenor, Elizabeth Callaghan, for all her hard work in this area.

There will be a nine-hole turkey competition running from Monday to Friday every week. Each competition will consist of 30 entries for one turkey and re-entry will be allowed. The prize for each competition will be a voucher for either Stafford’s or Wickham’s butchers.
The gents’ open Seniors is on November 9 starting at 8 a.m., sponsored by E.G.C.
There is a men’s competition, 15-hole v-par, on Sunday, November 12, starting at 8 a.m.

NEW ROSS
Excellent golfing conditions and high scoring was the story of the Halloween champagne scramble. This increasingly popular form of the game attracted over 200 pairings who thoroughly enjoyed themselves in a dry and balmy October weekend.
In racing parlance, we had a runaway winner or winners to be precise with the pairing of Derek Byrne (8) and Kate Byrne (36) from Slade Valley Golf Club shooting a terrific 63 points to take first prize.
Some seven points behind in second place came Charlie Collins (18) and Ger Freyne (19) on 56 points. Third spot with 55 points was filled by two low handicappers, Derek Ronan (2) and Michael Kelleher (6).
The ladies’ prize went to Mary Shannon (17) and Mary J. Maher (28) with 52 points.
A sure sign that the golfing season is coming to a close is when the matchplay results come pouring in. The club foursomes competition was won by Joe Doyle and Declan Clark who beat Eamon Dungan and Leo Carroll in the final.
In the fourball event, Liam Connolly and Brian St. Ledger saw off the challenge of Tadgh Carroll and Seán Diskin to emerge winners after a hard battle. Again, in the singles there was another epic contest before James O Brien got the better of the ultra-consistent Donal Hosey.
Michael Ryan Jnr. was the impressive winner of golfer of the year, totalling up 112 points during the course of the season. The evergreen John Murphy finished second with 60 points. Michael also took the Culcita trophy for best gross scores during the year.
NEW ROSS SENIORS
Availing of the present spell of good weather, 15 teams took part in our weekly outing on Thursday. This time around it was a stableford competition which most of the older brigade find hard enough.
Though conditions were still on the soft side underfoot, the greens were in immaculate order and putting on them was a sheer delight, that is if the ball could find the cup.
Tough pin placings on some of the holes meant scoring was hard to come by, but as usual one team made the running and emerged clear winners.
Dick Cuddihy (15), Willie Naddy (19), Donie Cody (23) and Jim Kehoe (25) put together an impressive 94 points to finish in the number one spot. On 85 points and in second place came Patsy Farrell (16), Frank Coughlan (16), Billy Redmond (19) and Liam Glasheen (20).
The third position was filled by Andy Ronan (15), Eamon Delaney (16), Jamesie Wallace (22) and Fr. Jim Curtis (22), registering 84 points. Nearest the pin prizes were won by Larry Shannon on the ninth hole and Tony Harford on the eleventh.
This Thursday, November 9, we revert to a champagne scramble, a format which makes the game more enjoyable for the vast majority of our members. All please note that the draw for teams is still at 9.40 a.m. sharp, and players should be there in good time.
They should remain in the clubroom for the draw and know what team they are on - no use being down in the car park and questioning and asking the first person down: ‘Do you know what team I am on?’ It’s up to the individual to find that out that by staying put in the room.
NEW ROSS LADIES
Some lovely fine days over Halloween meant there was plenty of activity on our course. This allowed for some great scoring, especially from Adeline Foxe who only joined the club this year under the Get Into Golf scheme. Well done Adeline.
The place is in magnificent condition at the moment, dry underfoot with fairways looking resplendent in the winter sun. The new mower has been a godsend and the newly-acquired leaf gatherer means there is little trouble finding a ball even in the rough. Thanks to the groundsmen for their continued hard work.

This week (November 8) we will start the first of the turkey competitions in the run-up to Christmas. As usual it will be a 14-hole stableford and of course you can play at the weekend if unavailable on Wednesdays.
There will be a prize-giving this Wednesday, November 8, at 6 p.m. for the winners of the last three competitions as well as golfer of the year and Kathleen Pyne Memorial fourball.
Please be in attendance or nominate someone to accept your prize.
The closing date for receipt of names for the winter league is this Wednesday, November 8. Please add your name to the list in the locker room and pop €5 in an envelope.
Remember, an ongoing nine-hole competition is an option for everyone to keep an edge on your game! Play as often as you like for €3.
The sharpen your short game weekly competition continues until December, with the remaining tuition from James and Paul in the next two weeks.
The scoring in this game has been excellent so hard work pays off ladies. Thanks to the professionals for their interest and useful tips around the greens.
Thank you to two sets of volunteers. The Juniors were out on Tuesday, followed by the Get Into Golf girls on Saturday. Without your help these initiatives are not possible.
The future success of the club is dependent on a flow of new members so it is essential that both programmes continue over the winter and into 2018.
Former President Marie O’Connor displays her creative side in her recently opened art exhibition in the cafe of St. Michael’s Theatre, New Ross. The exhibition continues for November and all are welcome.
The ladies’ section A.G.M. will take place on Thursday, November 9, at 8 p.m. in the clubhouse.
