Women’s health is focus of conference
THERE was a good turnout at the third annual conference on Women’s Health for the Ireland East hospital group.
Dr Elizabeth Dunn, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Wexford General Hospital, said the conference had been a great success.
‘It went very well for us and we had doctors, nurses and medical staff there from all over the Ireland East Hospital group.
‘It was our third annual conference and was held to bring together all medical staff with an interest in women’s health. We had over 60 people in attendance and this is the first year the BST trainees attended.’
There were several speakers on the day including: Dr Niall McEniff from St James’ Hospital; Dr Karen Flood from the Rotunda; Dr Paula Calvert and Dr Miriam O’Connor from University Hospital Waterford, Dr Deirdre Lundy - a general practitioner who specialises in sexual and reproductive health and Dr Cathy Burke from Cork University Hospital.
Local speakers at the conference included: Joyce Hill and Audrey O’Leary who are physiotherapists at Wexford General Hospital, senior dietician at Wexford General Therese Hogan as well as a new consultant at the hospital Tasmeen Ramhendar as well as two trainee doctors Dr Satti and Dr Catherine Windrim.
Dr Dunn said that some of the topics discussed include: endometriosis, fibroid management, using chemotherapy in gynaecological cancer, breast cancer in pregnancy and older women, diabetes and pregnancy, management of third degree tears in pregnancy, chronic pelvic pain, hysteroscopy service, clot management, non invasive peri-natal testing, updates in urogynaeology and contraception for women over 40.
She said it is hoped to hold another conference in Wexford next year adding there had been a very good attendance locally with 15 local GP’s attending.
Dr Dunn said the conference couldn’t have happened without the support of the hospital manager and management, the IT staff and the sponsors.
