Gorey give Garda the blues
GOREY SENIOR ladies travelled to Garda/Westmanstown on Sunday for a top of the table clash.
Garda/Westmanstown started the stronger, attacking the Gorey line in the opening minutes but the defence held firm.
Gorey then launched some attacks and spent a lot of time inside the Garda/Westmanstown half. The pressure paid off when, after some strong work from the Gorey pack, Denise Deering showed great determination to get over for the try which Triona Murray converted.
From the re-start Gorey got back into the Garda/Westmanstown half but the home side’s defensive line held firm. The game then entered a period where both defences were on top.
Gorey were next to score when, from a clearing kick, Róisín Murphy won the race to the ball which she kicked on and Ciara Tomkins collected and ran to cross over the line.
Garda/Westmanstown applied pressure to the Gorey line which resulted in a penalty which came back off the post.
Gorey cleared the ball but Garda/Westmanstown launched another attack and were awarded another penalty which Ciara McDonnell converted.
In the last play of the half Gorey scored another try.
Following some strong carries from the pack, the play went wide and Georgina Hearn crossed over for the try.
The second-half started much the same as the first with Garda/ Westmanstown applying a lot of pressure to the Gorey line.
This proved to be the theme of the half with the vast majority of pressure being applied by Garda/ Westmanstown, with only brief relief for the Gorey defence.
Ultimately the Garda/Westmanstown pressure paid off and with the last play of the game Anna Harkin crossed the line to score a try which Ciara McDonnell converted, bringing the final score to 17-10 in favour of the visitors.
