Magic on Wexford Quay as Santa switches on the Christmas lights
TOWN BUZZING WITH FESTIVE EXCITEMENT AT OPENING OF WEXFORD WINTERLAND
NOT EVEN the biting cold could wipe the smiles off the happy faces that enjoyed the Christmas Parade and official opening of the Wexford Winterland Festival on Saturday afternoon.
Kids and adults alike wrapped up warm and lined the streets and quay front as the Wexford Retailers Winterland parade made its way from Selskar Square through the streets to the Quay.
Marching to the beat of local drummers, Bloco Garman, Santa, Mrs. Claus and his elves were joined by members of Wexford Pantomime Society, who are hard at work on their January production of ‘Cinderella’.
After outrunning the Ugly Sisters to the Quay, Santa was joined by the Mayor of Wexford, Cllr. Jim Moore. The countdown commenced and Wexford was lit up – not just by the twinkling festive lights but also by a surprise fireworks display that delighted the thousands of spectators.
The Winterland Festival began in 2014 and has been a huge success. This year, another new attraction is added to the line-up – Santa’s North Pole Experience will be filled with wonder and enchantment around every snowy corner. Kids and adults can enjoy a stroll through the Enchanted Forest and the Elves Village before meeting Santa.
The Wexford People Wexford On Ice skating rink is open and runs until January 7 while the Christmas Express has also rolled back into town. The ornate train will take in the sights and sounds of Wexford town following a route along the main streets while Mrs. Claus will regale passengers with Christmas stories.
Wexford Winterland Festival is an economic initiative of Wexford Co. Council, run in partnership with Wexford Retailers and Lantern Events.
Tickets for Wexford On Ice, The Christmas Express and The North Pole Experience can be booked at the Box Office at 1 North Main Street.
