Flurry of goals seals the deal

Glynn-Barntown march on

- ML. HEFFERNAN in Killurin

THREE GOALS in the space of seven minutes proved enough to set Glynn-Barntown up with a semi-final spot as they saw off Oylegate-Glenbrien in this Greenstar U-21 football Premier ‘A’ championship quarter-final in Killurin on Saturday.

It was a relatively easy win for the home side as they simply outclassed their opponents all over the field, with their full-forward line looking particularly impressive, bagging three majors in clinical fashion which proved to be the difference between the sides in the end.

The teams looked evenly matched in the early stages, with Seamus Casey and Fiachra Hourihane exchanging scores with Frank Hynes and Ben O’Shea.

This was as close as it would be, however, as shortly after Matthew Joyce put the eventual winners ahead on the ten-minute mark, the lively full-forward set Jack Brazzill up to bury a shot to the top corner of the net.

Joyce was causing real problems for the Oylegate-Glenbrien defence and was on hand two minutes later to get his side’s second goal after a well-worked move.

Brazzill and O’Shea were causing as much trouble on the corners, and hit a point apiece just before a high ball was excellently read by Joyce who sneaked inside his marker and finished coolly to the net, giving the home side a lead they were never going to lose.

Seamus Casey was unlucky not to find the net for Oylegate-Glenbrien minutes before he hit two points to leave nine between the sides at the break.

There was very little to shout about in the second-half as Glynn-Barntown didn’t show the same bite they had earlier in the game and were happy enough to hold their lead, and Oylegate-Glenbrien lacked the capacity to worry them in any way.

Aaron Breen exchanged scores with Tom White just after the break before Shane Reck was pulled down in the small square midway through the half, with Casey converting the resultant penalty to give Oylegate-Glenbrien a glimmer of hope.

There was only going to be one winner, however, and Glynn-Barntown finished out the half with two points from Aaron Kehoe and one from Brazzill to ensure a safe passage to the last four and a clash with Taghmon or Naomh Eanna.
