THE family of a young Wexford woman brutally assaulted at the weekend in a late-night attack as she walked home from her Christmas party, have appealed for information to help gardai find the perpetrator who is still at large.

Amy Hayes (27), a visual merchandiser in New Look, was on her way home from the company’s Christmas night out when she was set upon and subjected to a violent assault near Abbey Court in George’s Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Amy sustained extensive bruising injuries to her body and broken bones in her face after being violently kicked and punched by her attacker in a vicious unprovoked asssault that took place at approximately 3 a.m. after she made her way from Trapatoni’s takeaway in Monck Street and walked through North Main Street to George’s Street.

‘She fought back so hard,’ said her sister Gillian who outlined the Hayes’ family’s shock and upset at the incident. ‘He kicked the living daylights out of her. The fight in her saved her life.’

‘This was an unprovoked attack with excessive violence. No personal belongings were taken’, said Gillian. ‘She is bruised from head to toe and she has broken bones under her nose. It’s the brutality of it’.

A woman living in Abbey Court heard Amy screaming and turned on the light in her apartment before going onto her balcony. The woman screamed at the man to stop and he ran off. She then rang the gardaí.

Amy was brought by ambulance to Wexford General Hospital and transferred later that day to Waterford University Hospital.

An incident room has been set up at Wexford Garda Station and investigating officers are

appealing for witnesses to the assault. Anyone who has information should call 053 9165200.

‘The young woman was attacked from behind by a male who proceeded to punch and kick her. He was disturbed by a resident who heard her screams’, said a Garda spokesman.

Gillian Hayes appealed to anyone who saw anything suspicious or who may have seen Amy walking home to contact the gardaí.

‘We urge anyone who may have witnessed anything or heard anything to reach out to us due to the seriousness of this assault’, pleaded Gillian, the owner of Gillian Hayes Property Letting in Redmond Square.

She warned others to be careful. ‘The attacker is still at large so we would warn anyone walking home alone to beware’, she said.
