NINE BUDDING Wexford artists were honoured recently after winning first prize in their categories of the local Credit Union Art Competition.

The competition, which is in its 34 th year, runs at local, chapter and national level for kids from seven to 18 years. It attracts up to 30,000 entries through 250 credit unions nationwide and also offers a Special Category for those with intellectual or physical disabilities.

There was a great response to the competition in Wexford and the standard of entries was praised on the night of the prize-giving.

This year’s theme was ‘Set Your Imagination Free’, which gave plenty of scope to entrants who were encouraged to interpret the theme any way they wished. Chairperson of the Marketing Committee of Wexford Credit Union Jos O’Connor said: ‘The annual competition is part of the Irish League of Credit Unions’ commitment to supporting the artistic development of both young and old in communities through Ireland. ‘Producing and creating art can have many benefits for adults such as reducing stress and aiding the development of creative problem-solving skills. For children, painting and creating art can nurture fine-motor skills and neural development, while allowing them to express their emotions.’

Winners of the local competition go on to the Chapter competition and, from there to the National competition. Winners at national level will see their artwork printed in the Credit Union calendar for 2019.
