‘Shanks’ has a winning night

Whelan so close to double

-

TWO VERY good finals were on offer in Enniscorthy Greyhound Track on Monday of last week, and it was a good night for Piercestown owner, trainer and breeder, ‘Shanks’ Whelan.

His Piercestown Leaf got a good break in the Geoff Parnaby A3 stake and was always going to be hard to beat after that.

Leaf ran on strongly to hold the challenge of Lord Of Light by two lengths in a fast time of 28.83.

And it was so nearly the perfect night as his Piercestown Mask only failed by a head to catch Brightside Vim who is also owned by an owner, trainer and breeder in John Kavanagh from Inglewood, Enniscorthy, whose runners are in good form of late.

Vim’s time was 29.09 in winning the A4 stake sponsored by the Wexford greyhound owners and breeders association.

The first round of the A5/6 stake also got under way with four heats, and if the times are anything to go by this is going to be a hotly-contested stake.

Fastest of the four heats was in the very first as Miss Hector got away well and ran out a snug three lengths winner.

Kilmore owner Ian Tierney is having a good run of late and he scored a nice win in race eight with Moma Mermaid.

The victor put her early pace to good use and fulfilled the promise she showed in a recent novice stake in Waterford.

Stepping into graded class for the first time proved no problem and she should have more improvement to come.
