Change in junction right of way near Garda station

- By MARIA PEPPER

TRAFFIC priority at a junction in The Folly, Wexford has been changed to facilitate Garda cars responding to crime calls from the new station headquarters in Mulgannon.

A sign was erected at the junction recently, following the opening of the new Garda Station, informing motorists that the right of way has been changed.

Traffic driving up the hill from the King Street crossroads previously had priority on the junction but that has now been altered to provide a more convenient route to the centre of town for garda vehicles.

‘It’s to facilitate emergency vehicles. We looked at the junction and felt the safest thing to do would be to give priority to traffic coming from the Wexford Garda Station direction. It’s a safer junction as a result’, said a Garda spokesman.

Many motorists found the old right of way confusing and there was often uncertainty among drivers about who had the right of way at the junction.

A proposed alternative outlined at a Council meeting for the creation of twoway traffic on the road from King Street to The Folly (at the side entrance to Tesco) did not proceed.

Cllr. Ger Carthy and Cllr. George Lawlor had asked the local authority to review and amend the traffic management plan to allow emergency access to the town centre for members of An Garda Siochana driving out of the new station.
