Gardaí investigating assault trawl through CCTV footage

-

GARDAI in Wexford arrested a man in connection with an assault on young Wexford woman Amy Hayes who was beaten up as she walked home from a work Christmas party late at night.

The man was arrested by detectives at approximately 1.50 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

As part of their investigation into the incident, gardai trawled through CCTV footage from cameras along the route taken by Ms Hayes before the assault took place at Abbey Court in George’s Street at approximately 3 a.m. on Sunday, December 3.

The 27-year old New Look employee walked the short distance from Monck’s Place/Trapatoni’s Takeaway through North Main Street to Abbey Court following a night out at her work Christmas party. News of the late-night incident sparked fear throughout the town.

According to gardai, she was approached from behind by a young male who kicked and punched her as she attempted to fight back. A woman living in Abbey Court heard her screams and shouted at the attacker from her balcony, prompting him to flee the scene.

The victim received extensive bruising injuries to her body and sustained broken bones in her face during the assault.

A Garda spokesman said officers searched through CCTV footage during the investigation. ‘There are quite a number of cameras in the area’, he said.
