Club mucks in for Savage Saturday

- By ANNA HAYES

MEMBERS OF Glynn Barntown GAA Club will take to the trails on December 30 when they host their first ‘Muck Savage Saturday’ run.

The event, which is the brainchild of Ladies Football club chairman Barry Kirwan, will see particpants taking on a pitchside and woodland adventure course, over distances of up to 5k. Barry, who is an avid participant in such events, and a former winner of a To Hell and Back race, felt the event would be a good one for the festive period.

PRO of the Ladies Gaelic Football club Méabh Cooney said there had been huge interest in the event so far and plenty of banter about it on the club’s social media accounts.

‘Every senior member of the club is either taking part or helping out with stewarding or serving tea in the clubhouse. We’ll still be serving refreshments when the participants come back, probably covered head-to-toe in muck!’

The event is a joint venture between the ladies football club, the camogie club, and Coiste na nÓg and any funds raised will go towards the day-to-day running of the clubs.

‘The plan is to put out the feelers this year and, hopefully, if successful it will become an annual event. If any club members want to get involved, they can contact us and let us know.’

The race starts at Glynn Barntown GAA grounds and will take in the surrounding countryside and Carrigmannon woods. There are two distances: the 2.5k for Juniors (U14) and the 5k route for Seniors. Registration is at 9.15 a.m. and 9.45 a.m. respectively. Entry is €5 for juniors, €10 for seniors and €20 for a family. There will be prizes for the first girl and boy home in the U10, U14, U18 and adult categories.
