FAMILY AND friends of 71-year-old John Quirke gathered to mourn his loss recently.
John, from Caislean an Dinigh, Carrig-on-Bannow, passed away on November 13 and was laid to rest at Bannow Cemetery. His funeral Mass was celebrated by his nephew, Fr Billy
Caulfield CC.
Originally from
Broadway, he spent his early childhood in
Our Lady’s Island before moving to Cullenstown at a young age with his mother and sister Mary. He met his wife Olive at Bingo and they had celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in March of this year. The couple had three kids and subsequently moved to
Carrig-On-Bannow where John took a keen interest in community endeavours.
He was described as a ‘pillar of the community’, a wellknown and popular man. He volunteered at the Killag Show and, up until a few years ago, he helped out at Grantstown Daycare Centre, enjoying games of cards and catching up on the gossip and local chat. He was famous for his sleeveless jacket and cap, and all who knew him enjoyed his quick wit and sense of humour.
In recent times, due to ill health, he was a resident in Cherry Grove Nursing Home where he was well liked by staff and residents.
John’s Month’s Mind will take place in the Church of Mary Immaculate and St Joseph, Carrig-on-Bannow on December 27 at 7.30 p.m.
John is sadly missed by his wife Olive, his son John, his daughters Mary Ellen and Bridget, his sister Mary (Cunningham), extended family, relatives and friends.
May his gentle soul Rest In Peace.
