BEREAVEMENT

The tiny parish of Ballymore-Mayglass and its surrounding parishes were saddened to learn of the death of a true gentleman, a great family man and an exceptional gael in Nick Pettit.

Nick and his wife Teresa, who were married for 50 years reared their family in Ballydusker Killinick and in those early days he became central to all that was good in the parish and in particular the St Fintan’s GAA Club. He served the club for many decades as a player, a coach, a selector a fundraiser and had just stepped down from his position as club president before his sad passing. It was rear to see Nick in bad humour and his warm smile raised the spirits of us with the worries of the world on our shoulders.

To show the respect and support Nick had for the GAA and in particular the St Fintan’s club his dying wish was to be buried as close as possible to the club grounds in Ballymore and this he was granted and this proud man was taken to his final resting place in Ballymore cemetery with members of the St Fintan’s club performing a guard of honour where club president Nicky Newport draped a St Fintan’s jeresy over his coffin as it was laid to rest. The St Fintan’s GAA Club sends its heartfelt sympathies to Teresa and family. May he rest in peace.

LOTTO

The St Fintan’s GAA lotto now stands at €7,400 and tickets can be purchased from local shops and the club grounds on Tuesday evenings from 8 p.m. and from club members at a cost of €1.50. There is also a match-three prize of €200 up for grabs each week and Mick Crowley shared in this prize with the following numbers drawn were 4, 17, 31 and 33. Many thanks for your continued support. The club would like to wish all our supporters a very happy and peaceful christmas.

TOMHAGGARD CENTRE

A big thank you to everyone who supported last Sundays Christmas Fair in aid of Tomhaggard Defibrillator Fund which raised overe500.Thanks to the Women’s Shed, Scouts, who decorated and provided free Children’s entertainment, those who donated Confectionery, Prizes etc. those who helped out in any way. Unfortunately due to the dreadful weather our planned Live Crib had to be cancelled.

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING

From a suggestion by a Cub scout Josh Philips to do a Shoebox project for Helping Hands arose a fantastic gesture of giving and goodwill in the community. They wanted to have a present for everyone at the Wexford People Helping People Dinner in St Joseph’s Community Centre on Christmas Day. Also there was an appeal for supplies for Wexford Women’s Refuge.

So some of the ladies in the Women’s Shed knitted and brought in warm hats, scarves, gloves, food and toiletries etc. which were sorted by the Ventures on Monday night. Instead of their weekly Subs on Wednesday the Cubs and Scouts brought in small toys, colouring books, clothes, toiletries and food etc. On Wednesday night it was like Santa’s workshop as the Cubs and Scouts sorted all the donations, wrapped and make up 38 Shoeboxes for Helping Hands to be distributed to the children on Christmas Day and approximately eight full shopping bags of clothes, toiletries and food for the Women’s Refuge for distribution.

The atmosphere in the Social Centre was unbelievable, the feeling of goodwill and everyone working together for the benefit of others was magical. Bianca from Helping Hands called in to accept the Shoeboxes and thank everyone for their generousity. The clothes, toiletries and foodstuffs have been delivered to the Women’s Refuge, who were delighted to receive such a large donation. Thank you Scout parents and Women’s Shed ladies for your outstanding generousity.

COMMUNITY THEATRE

There was a Masterclass with Michael Dunbar MA in Tomhaggard social centre on Saturday last as part of our project funded by Creative Ireland. It was a wonderful day with everyone working together and learning from Michael’s vast experience as actor and director.

As the participants have enjoyed the workshops so much it has been decided to continue with the classes after Christmas.

WOMEN’S SHED

The ladies finished the year with a fantastic lunch at the Social Centre last Monday. The delicious food was prepared by Jimmy Devereux. Before that, some of the ladies who have been busy rehearsing a one-act comedy, put on their first performance of Mrs Dooleys Table which had everyone in stitches.
