RESIDENTS AND MOTORISTS HIGHLIGHT TRAFFIC WOES

- By ANNA HAYES

A RESIDENT living along the main entry way into Corish Park and Liam Mellows has voiced what he says are widespread concerns over road and traffic management in the estate.

Sean Farrell said the number of cars speeding along the roadway and through the estate was unacceptable, believing that speed ramps and a pe- destrian crossing were needed. He pointed out that the population of the 30-house area was mainly old age pensioners who frequently looked after grandchildren and the behaviour on the road posed a great danger to them.

‘This is a long-running issue and we have complained on numerous occasions but nothing has been done. We can’t even cross the road because of the speed they’re doing through here.’ He added that the the mornings, before school opening, and evenings, at school closing times, were the worst times of the day as people would drive through the estate to avoid hitting traffic along these routes. They were also swerving to avoid potholes which further exacerbated the problem. Mr Farrell also voiced concerns about the Stop sign at the entrance to Liam Mellows, saying that people took no notice of it and simply drove straight through whether they were going left or right.

‘Someone is going to be killed there one of these days,’ he said, pointing out that it was adjacent to a green area where kids played. He believed a speed ramp would help to slow down drivers speeding from the houses up to the junction.

A spokesperson for Wexford County Council said that the Wexford borough engineering staff were aware of recent concerns raised in relation to the area. The spokesperson said: ‘We are examining a number of options to improve traffic safety in the area and we will shortly bring a report before the members of the Borough District which will outline the most appropriate solutions to the issue together with an estimate of the associated costs.’
