RNLI off the Blackwater to Rosslare coast. The trio were herring fishing on November 17, 1977, when the got into difficulty. Gale force winds
resulted in their boat being blown out to sea but, luckily, they were able to flash a distress signal on a pocket torch that was picked up by another boat closer to the shore, and they raised the alarm.
The crew of the lifeboat on that night were Willie Stafford (coxswain), Matthew Wickham, Séamus McCormack, Sean Martley, Michael O’Brien, Pat Busher and Brendan Pitt.
The three men have previously fundraised for the local lifeboat. Hundreds of people attended the most recent event and enjoyed finger food, live music and a raffle.
Rosslare RNLI PRO Jamie Ryan said they were extremely grateful to the three men for organising the event and to all those who had so generously supported it. He explained that the organisers had requested that the money raised be spent on assisting Rosslare RNLI and said they would be considering how best that funding could be used to develop the local lifeboat service.
